Nice shots! How was the lighting overall for the set? My show late in the tour was outdoors while it was still light out so I didn't get to appreciate the lighting guy's work.. Different lighting guy from the first part of the tour when I photographed them.

The lighting was superb! I enjoy shootings arena shows because the lighting is almost always perfect.

Thank you everyone for the compliments!

Absolutely sensational.

I'd kill to shoot more shows in lighting like that. I'm shooting a big festival in Sydney this weekend so hopefully the lighting will be decent.

What gear/settings were you using?

The first time I shot in "true" concert lighting conditions, it was almost a religious experience. I shoot, primarily, in bars and large clubs, and the lighting ain't exactly the best in the world...

I know exactly what you mean Steve.

It's such a joy when you get the proper light shows.

I do like the small bars and clubs though to see bands and you really learn how to get those shots shooting in less than perfect conditions.

This was shot at a small (but larger than normal) club in San Diego:

This was shot under "concert lighting" at the House Of Blues:

Stunning! The Avenged images are simply mind boggling. I agree with Steve that you have raised the bar. I'm not sure what to do ... perhaps I will hand over my "Professor" hat to you, sigh. Really, really excellent. The last image is to amazing.

What gear/settings were you using?

Coheed / Avenged: Canon 20d body, Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens; ISO: 400, a few shots at 800; shutter: 1/125; aperture: f/3.5

Silent Hero: Canon 20d body, Canon 50mm f/1.8 & Tokina 12-24mm f/4 lenses; ISO: 800; shutter: 1/60 - 1/125; aperture: f/2.8-4

Hope that helps!

7 (the blue light spill) is so near, but IMO 8 just take right off!

Some one should tell the House of Blues lights guy about footlights. BTW, does anyone else here loath back of stage high mirrorbacks shining into FOH?

yea i bet. ive shot shows before that have absolutely NO LIGHTING, i went to shoot a band once and the "venue" aka half of a room, had no lights on, just ambient light coming through a window.

consider yourself very lucky that you have that lighting.

very very nice. I didnt think the 50mm 1.8 could be that good.

Extremely nice shots. I can't seem to get mine quite as sharp and clear as that. What can I do to improve that? Of course, I just started using a Canon 20D, and the venues I've been allowed to use a pro camera in were not well lit overall.

They don't have the same level of clarity at all. I'm also still learning how to use the camera and just used the standard on camera flash (which isn't the best) on the flash pics (most of them - probably all of them here.)

I avoid using flash altogether for most concert photography (with the exception of local bands, smaller venues). Without flash, you get a more natural ambient color. I think using the regular flash just washes out the clarity of the picture... try a slower shutter speed if you use flash - it'll make for some interesting shots.

Those pics were in a smaller club. I was able to get a few without flash for the first group, but then they dropped the lights and the few I tried were really dark. And my pics were really not great when I lowered the shutter speed, too dark when I raised it. Of course, I am still experimenting with it. I'd like to try some with/without flash, but I don't want to use a lot of flash because in addition to losing some of the interesting color it is rather distracting. I just ordered the 50 mm 1.8 lens so I hope I will get a chance to see what it will do at a concert.
