Western Scrub-Jay and a White-crowned Sparrow from the Elkhorn Slough and Moss Landing area near Monterey, CA. These are two of my favorite captures from the trip. Both with the 30D and 300mm f4L + 1.4x TC.

The little guy sure has something to talk about, doesn't he? That's a very cute shot. Unfortunately the birds seem a bit soft in both pics.

Beautiful composition in the both shots. Good quality photos.

Thanks; I'm not sure why the second one appears a little soft (it's fine printed, but does look a tad off online). Without looking at the EXIF data, I think both were taken fairly wide-open (f5.6 or 6.3), which would probably account for it. I usually leave my 300+1.4x at f8 for the better sharpness I thus get.

Monopod for both of those, I believe.
EXIF Data:
Jay = f8, 1/320, ISO 200 (here I was thinking I'd gone with f5.6)
Sparrow = f5.6, 1/1000, ISO 200
The sparrow could also be slightly front-focused.
