newbie flash question

My photos come out funny when i take portrait photos with my flash attached to my 350D, is this because the head of the flash is designed to be used in landscape mode insted of portrait? If so then does this mean i need a off shoe cord when taken photos in portrait?

Sounds like you need the cord and a flash bracket. But you could try bouncing the flash.

Post a photo, "funny" isn't a great description. Side shadow is caused by light position and wall location, give it a little thought and it's obvious.
