Is this lens bad in regards of image quality?

I'm choosing between this lens and the 28-135mm IS USM. The mm'ers isn't so important. What I most want is image quality.

See www.wlcastleman.com/equip/reviews/28_135zoom/ for reviews of these two lenses. Twas on the strength of that plus reviews here that helped me decide on 28-135. Tis not perfect but tis bloody good!

I love my 24-85 ... its on the camera a LOT
(my other lens is the 70-200 f4 L)

the 24-85 .. set at 70 is not quite as good as the 70-200 set at 70 ... but its still pretty good!

i also use the eos 10d with the 24-85 usm. works great.
imho very good price/performance ratio :)

if you need more sharpness, then you'll have to go for an "L" .

With what I’ve learned using the D60 and now 10D (and having gotten used to hauling a 24-70f2.8 as my standard on-camera lens), I would probably have initially purchased the 28-135IS rather than the 24-85 simply for the extra 50mm reach.

I agree with Supernaut. I bought the 24-85 as my first DSLR lens – used it exclusively for 9months taking many nice pictures with it. The price/performance is certainly respectable, and I found it an extremely convenient size and weight to carry around. I bought it because I couldn’t swing the expense of either a 28-70f2.8 or a 24-70f2.8 L. Now that I actually own a 24-70L and a 70-200f4L, I understandably never use the 24-85 at all.

In retrospect after evaluating my first couple thousand pictures and their EXIF data I suspect much of the softness I attributed to my own DSLR learning mistakes were likely limitations of the 24-85 (similar limitations would apply to the 28-135 optics as well). That said – I would recommend the lens to those who understand it’s not as sharp as they may hope in wide aperture situations, and who prefer a smaller size and weight over the extra zoom reach. For the money I found 24-85f3.5-4.5 to be very acceptable.

My two cents.

I own both the 28-135IS and the 24-85. Both lenses produce excelent images. but i like the images of the 28-135IS better because they seem to be slightly sharper. 24-84 is great to drag along because of his weight. Now i also own a 100-400L IS and wow what a difference!!
