I had an experience with my EOS-10D, and the extended warranty I purchased worked out fine. I bought the Mack Extended warranty, and when my EOS started to have a power problem, I sent it in to Mack, and they sent it in to Canon. The hole process took about 3 weeks and cost me nothing. I do think that extended warranty's are worth it, they are like having car insurance. I purchased mine from www.scarolainc.com . They seem to have lower prices then B&H.
Has anyone else used Mack? I would like to know what your dealings were like.

If you had a new 10D that had a power problem, then you could have gotten the retailer or Canon to cover the repair for no cost to you.
So, exactly what does an extended warranty do for you?

If it's not NEW and beyond the warranty period from the manufacturer, Canon nor the place of purchase is going to help you without some type of service/repair charge. That's where the extended warranty will help, be it MACK or another company. They cover the repair fee when it's out of warranty.
If the camera is new, I agree, the place of purchase or Canon in this case should step in for a warranty repair....free.

In my case the extended warranty got me a brand new camera.
I had an almost 2 yr. old Minolta Dimage7 and the eye level viewfinder quit focusing. I took it back to Best Buy and they said they couldn't repair it so go exchange it for a new one. When I started looking at what I could exchange for at the original purchase price, the Digital Rebel jumped off the shelf.
It's nice to be back to an all Canon family again. I have owned Canon's since the 70's and still have 2 A-1's and an AE-1P, but when I bought the Minolta, there wasn't a Canon Digital that I could afford.
Now the only problem is lenses. I gotta get more AF lenses! Oh the problems we create for ourselves.

A broken Dimage for a new Digital Rebel?
Sounds like a damn fine trade to me.
I too got the Best Buy warranty/replacement plan. it was only like $45.00 and guarantees me a replacement or uprade if the camera is not repairable.

Aren't all 10D cameras new, by definition?
There are no two-year-old 10D's.

Normally, the extended warranties are a waste of money.
Why do you think so many stores are clamouring for you to buy extended warranties? Because it's a money maker, that's why.
Most 'manufacturing' defects occur well within the warranty period. Failures outside the warranty period are usually due to outside forces (sand, impact, water damage) that are not covered by the warranty. So the store is betting on the odds. Odds are your camera won't fail, odds are if it fails outside the warranty, it may not be covered by the warranty. So the actual payout is fewer instances than the actual amount of 'claims' they start with.
Best bet? Don't buy any extended warranties. All those extended warranties taht you don't buy, will add up and pay for any repairs that you do need (if you need them.)

I purchase extended warramties on Everything electronic I own and it has paid off big time.. I would challange you to use your 10D or any other camera at even a low ball 100 images a week and expect it not to break down in 3 years, and not because you got sand in it or dropped it. And why would you only get sand, water or physical damage only - After the warranty expired?
I have had printers replaced with better printers, CDRW drives replaced with faster and better drives. Cameras replaced with new and better cameras.
I dont really care if the company that sells the warranties is getting rich, all I care about is am I covered. Peace of mind not large repair bills. Repair centers are making a chunk of change to!.
My only issue with some extended warranty companies like service net or Phillips, is they dont send the product back to the mfg service center, they send it to an authorized repair center. I don't care for that :( but it's better than no coverage at all.
Buy them gets my vote -- they work
