Text w/ transparent background

Hi, I know this should be simple but,

I would like to create text in PS (CS2) with a transparent background and save as .jpg. When I save as .jpg, the background is white, not transparent.

Can anyone tell me where I am messing up here?

JPG's can't have transparancy.

Save as GIF.

Or if you need to you can also save as a tif or psd which both also handle transparency

Thank you both for your reply. When I save as a gif, it seems to trash the edges. (I am guessing it is my dithering setting)

The .tif works great and also the .png looks good.
