Nice Black Widow - it looked like one to my eyes before I even saw the 2nd image. Had the right body shape, leg shape and abdomen shape. What size was she? And what type of webs were they?
Black Widows are very closely related to the Australian Red Back spiders, and they build 3 dimensional webs.
I actually spotted some Redback spider webs in our bathroom a week ago, they were promptly removed by Angie, and she surface sprayed to make sure it was safe. I don't fancy getting up in the middle of the night singing "there was a redback on the dunny seat when I was there last night..." lol!

She is a black widow..that are quite prevelant here in the California desert. The webs are 3 dimensional and extremely sticky. This one is living under a cactus and has chosen a very nifty home. Thanks for looking.

That is definitely the real thing! The red hour glass is not on a faux black widow... however, you can find the real thing with one that is less obvious, so it pays to be careful.
I think you are far braver than me. How close did you have to get. Those girls can jump.. I've seen it! They will if there is an egg case nearby.
I think a redback in my house would not be welcome! And the thought of a Sydney funnel web spider would totally unnerve me. LOL I'm o.k. with spiders, but the poisonous kind... uh uh. lol
I like the second one... the first one could be sharper, but the water drops are cool. However, it's as sharp as I usually get. LOL

No, niether image is tack 'Sharp", as I was standing and turned upside down to get the shot. she was on the underside of the cactus....a bit of camera shake with the 100mm macro, which is very unforgiving.
We have tons of BlackWidows here in the desert and I am always careful not to leave garden shoes outside, or poke my hands into dark places. This was spring and a bit before the egg sacks begin to show up. I cannot locate her today, but there is plenty of webbing about.
Thanks for the additional comments......

i knew what was coming the second I saw the first shot. I've seen too many black widows. We had a woodpile by our house in New Mexico, and when I went to get a log from it for the fireplace, I knocked 3 off of a piece of wood. When we investigated a little further, we discovered it was infested. As we knocked over stacked logs, more and more, we saw at least 600 to 700 black widows.....
the moral of this story is, don't have logpiles in New Mexico. Black widows love to live in them.
And considering how many New Mexicans have log piles, I'm wondering how many get bit each year getting logs for their fireplace....

That sounds like a horror movie!
I'm so glad there are no poisonous animals here in the north... :p I don't mind the snow ;)
