I know this was brought up somewhere before, but I'll ask again since CS just came out.

I'm thinking of going the poor man route on this, does anyone know how far back in version the upgrade will work on? Could I pick up PhotoShop3 and upgrade it to PhotoShop CS?

Even if I had to pay $100 for Photoshop 3 and then the $169 upgrade seems really cheap compared to the full $650. Can anyone confirm this before I go ebaying?

The only reference I could find was this:

"Preorder Adobe Photoshop CS Upgrade
To install upgrade successfully, you will need a serial number and a previous version of this product on the same platform as this purchase. Upgrade does not apply to Photoshop Elements, Photoshop Limited Editon, or PhotoDeluxe owners."

Sounds like any version as long as you have a valid serial, but you may want to drop them an email at adobe and ask to be sure.

I'd say the key phrase is "and a previous version of this product on the same platform as this purchase", meaning Windows XP or whatever is appropriate. Don't know what happens next time you upgrade your OS...

Platform dependency is like Windows vs Mac vs Linux.

Aha! The terminology is often misused. According to a post in the other thread on this topic, Adobe will be moving to the MS type activation process.

While travelling on a BA flight, I bought a PC Magazine that had a free software CD.
I found a copy of PhotoShop 2.0 in it. A program like this this may just be enough for a upgarde

Photoshop 2 would be Elements and will not qualify for upgrade. (Maybe a try-out version anyway).
