Sonya, was not too sure if these shots will do as regards what you ask but I took them with the Pro1 one night last year
I didn't hang around with a tripod
I always liked the McDonald's building on the road and wanted to 'capture' it
well and good if I did or didn't
(out walking one evening)
the shots are all handheld
McDonalds (clear enough) : 1/8 f3
McDonald's 2 'crazy lights effect with traffic'
1/6 1/8
f/3
no flash used . all the shots are taken with the Pro 1
I think the Pro1 should be fine for you to get the results you want using a tripod

You have the general idea Marie of what I want to do.
I had read with the long exposures it was better to use the tripod thats what I am going to try we do not live in the big city actually we live in the country but I can get to the big city in about 30 minutes.Lots of traffic always there day and night. LOL.
Theres so much I want to do with the pro1 just have not had the time to do it all yet.

we live in the country too but not right out in the sticks
and it's about 30 miles from the city
the pictures were taken in a country town although it is a very busy place (trafficwise and other things)
I could stand on a bridge and get lots of shots of traffic going south especially after a football win in the city, the motorway is crammed with flying colours
looks great looking down from the huge bridges while standing on a country road . or when out walking and seeing the traffic on the motorway from a distance, especially at night
by the way
I just saw now repeats and other pictures on my last post
I had no idea there were those extra pictures on
the other host site (which I had posted the pictures on) went down last night and I had to put the shots on another site to show them at all
but seemly later......... when I was in bed asleep , the original test pictures came back . ones I had not meant to put on
really sorry about that
I took them off now
best of luck

Hello Sonya -
I generally use a tripod but sometimes try to get "artsie" and go wild without.
As I recall, this picture was late in the evening (15 minutes after sunset), tripod, ISO 50, ND filter (neutral density), 12 to 16 seconds (don't recall exactly); don't recall the f stop.
Have fun and don't forget that ND filter to extend the open time!

gewb

Sorry, this is not a Pro1 example, I used G6, but the principle the same, tripod, P mode - and you've got it! freeway car tails and everything!

Hello Sonya -
My AE-1 had a similar problem years ago but I fixed it myself.
Note that the AE-1 uses electro-magnetics in the shutter mechanism. You need a fairly fresh battery or the shutter will "stick" (as I recall).

Mine is also with a G6. 15 seconds with the aperture stopped down. Find a good spot, set up the tripod, and fire away. It's easy.

Sonya, I have checked exif data, I was wrong, I did it not with "P" mode, it was shutter priority "TV" mode, with shutter speed 2.5 sec. I did it severla times with different shutter speed and it was no visual difference, from 2 to 3.5 secs., you've got just different style of car lights tails.

Thanks Andrey. I really cant wait to try this out.
Gewb are you saying it was just the battery on the AE-1?
If not how did you fix it?

Hello Sonya -
Regarding the AE-1, indeed my problem was an "old" battery. It showed reasonable voltage on a meter but it couldn't deliver the (milli)amperage under load. New battery indeed solved the problem.
As to my storm pic, I did a manual focus to infinity, set the 2 second self timer and pressed the shutter button.

Yeah, they were all going the wrong way. Couldn't get them to turn around. If you've gotta have red, here's a taillight one.
This was a field trip my intermediate camera class took last year.
As far as settings, I used manual, 15 seconds, F8. One thing I don't think the Pro1 has is the built in ND filter. In fact, I think the G6 may be the only camera with it in software.

The Pro1 does have a built-in ND filter.

Excellent. It is very handy in the rare cases it is needed. I wish my 30D had one.

I am a Pro1 owner, but I am curious about the G6 ND filter:
One thing I don't think the Pro1 has is the built in ND filter. In fact, I think the G6 may be the only camera with it in software.
As gewb already said, the Pro1 does have a built-in ND filter, and it is a physical filter inserted with a clearly audible 'click' in the light path via menu settings.
I thought the G6 has the same feature, but leftturn99 said it is a software feature in the G6.
Can somebody confirm if it is a real ND filter or a software feature?
I found this in dpreview’s Canon G6 review:
ND Filter:
Can be switched into image path via rec menu
Approx 1/8 decrease in brightness (3 stops)

Yes it is a real filter on the G6 you can hear it move into position.

My bad. I thought it was software. I haven't heard it. Guess i drove race cars too long. Hearing loss.
Whatever, it's still a great feature.

Are yall saying when doing these types of shots we should have the ND filter on?

If you want a really long exposure, it'll help. It'll let you use 2-3x as long an exposure as you'd get without it, so longer light trails.
