Hi, i've recently been asked to sell a print of one of my images to a collector who would like to hang it in their home. They asking for the print to be 4 ft wide by 3 ft tall. I've never had to price any of my prints before, let alone something so large. So my question to you all is how would you go about pricing the print? Of course it would depend greatly on the cost of actually printing, but what would you charge on top of that? They pretty much just want the print, unmatted and unframed. Any help would be awesome. Thanks guys.

Really only you can answer that. I sell 12X18" prints for $150-200 & specify on the invoice that they get no "rights" with the sale.

First off, figure out what it will cost you to have that printed. I'd guess that for the print alone, you are looking at a cost of between $75 and $175 to get it printed, depending on what paper/canvas it is printed on.
Double that for starters.

I just went through hell selling a couple of 30 x 50 large prints. I asked for $400 each. Initially they cost me $196 to print. I thought great! yippeee, starting to make some money finally....Then I get a phone call from the curator who had issue with the quality. Long story short, when to Chrome, which is renown for quality and paid them $483 to print them and Courrier them over....and I am stillll waiting for that $800. So don't be shy to price them at least 2 or 3 times more than what just doing the print will cost. If these people or particular, be sure to get the best quality and spend any extra $$ on it. Make SURE to have them put in cardboard by the printer, worth the few extra $$''s. Best to check quality at printers and not handle until the client see them. Take some white gloves with you. Let me know what you do and how it goes.

Where is this Chrome place you speak of. Do they do business online? Were you happy w/ the service and outcome?

I was 200% happy with them. They are located in Georgetown, and I believe they do work online. I highly recommend them and will use them in the future for jobs that require a large print or that have to be perfect. I took Metro there and had them courrier the work directly to the client. Not sure where you are, but if you are far away and nervous about shipping, I suggest you ask around, especially contact some of the better galleries in your area and ask the curators for recommendations. Just make sure the client commits to price before you print them and are have a surplus. Really interested in how it all works out.

Thanks Photodawg, i emailed them to see if they'd be willing to do business over the internet/phone. I'm actually located in Southern California, but i wouldn't mind doing service completely over the net if i can be sure of the best service/outcome possible.
If anyone knows of any (and has had good experinces w/) printers that are able to print that large in Southern California, please let me know. Thanks!

Hello, I use printroom.com for all my printing as well as large formats. Ive had an older image printed out of my 10D at 30x40 that looked amazing. Ive used them for the past 3 yrs now and not had any complaints, most of my work being for weddings... and we all know how picky bride-zillas can be!!!
Printroom.com uses digital printers with the highest quality silver halide chemical process as used by regular photo finishers. This is direct digital continuous tone printing, which produces stunning photographic prints far superior to ink-jets or dye sublimation printers. <copied from their site>
I dont recall the paper type but I believe its a Fuji Professional Achieval paper. Very thick, high quality paper in matte, glossy, pro-luster and now they have metallic.
They have a 30-day moneyback guarentee on all prints. You can call and get some samples sent to you as well. I still have the samples they sent me years ago. I do all my ordering online and prints are mailed in oversized tubes.
Hope that gives you another option.

I also use printroom.com and they are great. I often have 30x40's printed and sell them for 250.
I tried Kinko's recently and that was a huge mistake :)
