Since this section is all about rumors and hearsay, I just figured I'd throw this out there. I'm currently in the market for a compact camera and have come across the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ1. It has no manual controls but fits in a pocket and has a 10x optical zoom (35-350mm equiv.) Does anyone know if Canon has any plans to develop something like that in the near future (preferably with more manual controls)? If not, what are some suggestions for the best compact cameras in terms of 1) Optical Quality 2) Low Noise 3) Manual controls?

Thank you for your responses. However, I am aware of the Canon powershots. I have a powershot S1. Though the S2 and S3 are better, I am not really looking to get a camera of that size. I was just wondering if, like Panasonic, Canon is going to release a camera with a 10x optical zoom or similar that can fit in a pocket. Again, any feedback is appreciated.

Im not quite sure on the release, but a question if you will. I heard that these compacts store extra lens in the body, and shuffle them when needed, to get the extra zoom in. Since it's not built into a full single lens compound, would you lose a significant amount of quality, or sharpness?

I'll add to that - at that kind of zoom, it would be tricky to have any sort of stability with such a small body.
