I have a 20D and I need a backup. I really want the 5D but don't know if it's worth it to spend 3 times as much money on? Can any of you pros tell me what you think? In a way I want to upgrade and in a way I think the 20D is just fine for my pictures. Is it worth the extra $2000????

To me it was worth every cent. I use both. but love the color from the 5D. i would go try one out and decide for yourself.

I have used one for a bit, a friend has one (and a 20D), and when I was buying my 2nd body money wasn't an issue - but value was. He loves his 5D and is trying to convince my to get one. IMHO the 5D isn't worth the extra cost.

I don't know, really. What I can say is that the 5D is the ONLY body that I have doubled in a month or so after getting the first one. I love it soo much that the 1D2N almost gets dust (wait, before somebody asks to send it in, I said "almost", not it just does the job it was designed for, action shooting :D).

Depends how much money you have to spend.

The fact that I can buy 2 x 30D's for less than 1 x 5D has made my decision very simple.

You all have good points. I have to think about if it's worth it for a couple of days. The biggest benefits that I see for the 5D is a full frame and 12 megapixels. I guess those are big features.

Remember with full frame the edges won't look as good as on a 30D.

IMHO I'd go for another 20d. Easy transition from one to the other especially if one crapped out on me. Plus the extra money saved on the 20d would go toward GLASS - Sam

Thanks for the comments and pointers.

Tim - really? The edges won't look as good? I guess it makes sense but I wouldn't have thought the image quality would look worse in any way. Hmmm.... more to think about.

Joanna - I think Tim is speaking towards the fact with the full frame you use all of the lens. . . with crop factor we get to use the sweet spot only. A lot of lenses struggle with quality around the edges and with the crop bodies this just isn't a factor.

You can mount a medium format lens on it and it will solve the problem.

5D isn't worth it IMO. The AF system isn't there.

Now, whey they give me a 45 point AF for the same price... maybe.

Thanks guys. It's funny, i think that people with the 20D recommend the 20D and people with the 5D swear it is worth it. I'm still indicisive. I'll probably go with the 20D though. It's a little more realistic in my budget and I think it gives outstanding images :)

And people like me who are stuck with 300D bitterly bash the AF systems. ;)

But then again, you could always crop them :D

I think the advantage of full frame is worth spending all that money. I have both 5D & 20D. In the end, it's all a matter of shooting style. It might be worth its weight in gold to some, while being worthless to others.

**Edit: BTW, the soft corners occurs with wider lenses pretty much.
DocFrankenstein, what do you need a 45 point AF for shooting weddings? Yea, it would be great, but no really necessary. Also, can't make a 1Ds for 3 grand.

I don't really NEED the thing at all. I just like the way it has a smooooth shutter release button. :o

I'll prefer a rangefinder anyways. My DSLR bag weighs a ton and I can only take it on "shoots". A bessa with 3-4 lenses will fit in the palm of my hand AND the lenses are cheaper AND they are made out of metal IN GERMANY. No soft corners with wide angles.

I've seen some prints with this baby yesterday. It's insanely sharp and rectilinear:

The only problem is the light falloff... but the picture is really good.

I'm with you on that one :D

The 20D's shutter sometimes embarrases me:-P;)

Yes, it's the loudest, most violent sounding SLR shutter I've used. Not good for trying to sneak some candids in a not so crowded room...
