I'm not sure if this is a dead pixel or some dust on the lens or what have you. I see that it appears on all my pictures in the same spot. It's not big but it IS annoying. I put a black background in the picture so it shows better. I got my powershot s50 from the US in June so it still should be under warranty. Just would have to see how to go about returning it for repair or replacement. Thanks to everyone for any help you can give.
OOPS! When the picture resizes you can't see the white spot anymore. You have to view it full size. It's on the left side close to the middle.
Thanks again

I can't see any dot - and saving the picture as a .bmp file and looking through it with a hex editor doesn't show anything except coding for black through very black! Did you post the correct file or do you perhaps have a problem with your monitor?

Do you mean the white dot at the lower left part of the pic?
Some days ago, I took a pic of the lenscap with my G3 (to have a whole black picture).
I have also a white dot at the right lower part of the black pic.
I took the same picture with different apertures and the dot was still there...
So my guess was it was a dead pixel... but I guess I am lucky... 1 out of 4M 8)

Ooh ooh I see it!
Now that you know it's there you can easily fix it on the images you don't resize (since resizing makes it go away.)
About getting it fixed, contact Canon regarding dead or stuck pixels.

I took a second look - and found it. Zooming to max in PSP shows it as an H pattern of 7 pixels. The pixel making the crossbar is the brightest. I guess its this one that you've noticed. As for the cause - well, it doesn't look like a classic hot pixel as they usually come in a single colour. If it's in the same place on all pic's I guess it's some fault on the CCD though. If it was my camera I think I would take several shots inside a black plastic bag (Can you set a fast shutter speed? on the S50) at max resolution, minimum compression. I would also set a slow shutter speed and take a few shots of something white. The idea being to see if you have under as well as over performing and/or stuck pixels. If it is bothering you - I would try for a replacement under warranty.
For loads of info on hot pixels and how to test for them then take look here at this site (http://webpages.charter.net/bbiggers/DCExperiments/html/hot_pixels.html)

Hmmm... couldn't the H simply be the standard jpeg-artefact?

Most likely.

Damn, have been checking back and it's in all my pictures since I got the camera. Usually instead of the H though (I did not pick that up until you guys mentioned it) I get the white dot with a slightly larger black circle around it. Well I'm not sure what it is, but as it only seems to appear in one place in all the pictures and is pretty easy to see I think I will try and have it repaired Thanks to all, I'll let you know how it goes.

If I were you I'll change it...
For me I'll ever look at that damn pixell!!
I got a problem almost like that... It was with a Nikon Coolpix 775 and I was abou to buy it but I giveup since I was afraid that the problem grows up (in fact was a couple of green pixels)
