Okay, so my 30D has some play (movement) in the lens mount plate. It is most pronounced when I use the 200 w/ 1.4X TC. Never had any problem with my XT with all the same lenses. My question is, should I try to tighten it or send it in to get it tightened?

Well, there is of course going to be some, minute, extremely tiny amount of play. There's no mount which will amount to a lens cemented to the body so I'm not quite sure how much you're expecting.

But then again its all in respect to relativity. How much movement are we talking about?

On my XT the lenses all mounted solidly. There is probably a mm or 2 of movement. Enough to notice, at least with my longest setup on it.

A "mm or 2" ?
IMH - That's a significant enough free-play that can affect both Focus accuracy & Lens mechnical Integrity.

Send it in to Canon - or better yet, get a new 30D replacement !

Thanks, I was really afraid that is what I would have to do. But since I had the weekend to wait until I could send it back, I thought I would give it a shot. Think I will send it to Canon as it is faster than trying to get an exchange from B&H (their only downfall in service is exchanges).

Yeah I also have this.
I first noticed it with my new 100-400 but have since noticed with some other lenses too (10-22). It doesn't seem to have much play with the 24-105 and I don't know why that is the case. Either way, it hasn't affected my pictures yet (as far as I can tell), but I'd be interested to hear what Canon has to say about this.
Are you going to call and talk to them first or just send it in? Let me know what happens, as I've also been thinking about sending mine in. I just can't imagine being without my baby for long.

My 30D has no "play" on any of my lenses, other than my 70-200L IS, with which there is a tiny amount of movement either way, but not enough that you could measure it.

Probably just over reacting, personally I think a little play is with in the tolerances of being ok.

Okay I took out the micrometer to measure it and with the 200 + 1.4X TC the play is 1.12 mm. I am just concerned as I had no such play on my XT. I am going to call Canon in the morning and see if I can talk to someone before I send it in.

My buddies XT has a mount way stiffer then any I have ever used. It's stiffer then my Drebel 300D and way stiffer then my Elan film body. It's stiffer then my other buds Eos 3, does this help? The XT is just a tight fit IMO.

HMMM. I wonder if it might be a case of comparison, rather than actual play. Well I am planning on calling Canon in the morning so maybe I will know more then.

Before sending your camera out for forever and one day, maybe you could go to a retail shop and try one of your lenses on a 30D body? See if it wiggles on that one, too.

Yeah, here is one of the wonders of living in Iowa. The nearest camera shop is about 100 miles away. Still, if it was one of the lenses, you would not think that it would be all of the lenses.

Well, I called Canon and they said that a little play will not hurt anything, but to be on the safe side I can send it in. I think that I will do just that.

It's totally normal, for some reason some lenses do it and some don't. My 70-200 2.8 has done it on every body I have had......10D, 3 20D's and my Mk2N. While other lenses are very tight, and some just barly move. None of which has ever effected anything. You do what you think is right but IMO your wasting your time sending it in. There was a thread on this a while back and when all was said the majority thought it was normal.

I have a lens that does it, it did it on all the one's I returned it for. It's fine, just life and it does not hurt my gear or pictures. I'm sure you will be fine as well.

My 70-200 and the 300 2.8 both have a small amount of play which can be noticed on both my 1DMKII N and my 20D but have never had a problem with them yet.

how long does it usually take to get your stuff back from Canon? Since you're in Iowa and I'm in Madison, WI I would assume we have the same canon service centers. Also, I think I'll hold off for now in sending my camera in to wait and hear what happened with yours. Will you please give us an update and let us know whether anything was different or "fixed" when you get it back?

thanks.

I recently had a small panic about this with my 5D. I noticed it on a new 180 lens but they realised my other lenses do it too it's just that they are shorter so it was not noticable so much. The 180 also has a tripod mount so that made a bit of a difference. Mine was a rotational movement. I check my Leica M and old Canon A1 they too had some play with the Leica showing the most and the A1 the least. Someone here suggested I put it in the fridge for a few hours to see how that affected it. Well I did't do that as the photos are sharp and it seems reasomable there would be a bit of play to allow for temperature changes etc. Canon also told me to sent the whole works in so they could check it. I guess thay would rather play on the safe side.

I think I may have them check it in the fall before the body turns one. I don't think your movement will prove to be a problem if it is rotational movement. If you do send it in I for one would like to hear the results of the check up.

Good luck.
