I'm thinking of getting this lens, the APO version, because it's so cheap compared to others.

My gallery (http://www.flickr.com/photos/airbrontosaurus/sets/72057594127230520/) is all taken with the Simga 70-300mm APO DG macro and extension tubes.
I don't have any macros with just the sigma, but if you want to do any serious macro you're definitely going to want to get at least extension tubes. Also, its "macro" mode is only 1:2, which is technically not even macro.
I definitely recommend this lens if you want to shoot things other than macro. It has served me incredibly well.

I found this lens hard to get good shots in it's normal macro mode but AirBrontosaurus has shown you can get excellent macro shots with it set at 70mm with a set of extension tubes.
