Just got the Off Shoe Cord 2, have a 420EX -- can I "cheat" by using either the 550EX or Sigma 500 Super DG as master on the cord and the 420 on the other side? Or do these work as master only when on the camera? Thanks for your help!

The purpose of the off-shoe cord 2 is that the flash unit will work the same on the end of it just like it would if it were on the hot shoe.

That shouldn't be a problem, except that the off-the-camera cord is too short to make much difference in the flash placement.
That pretty much means that the master will only be used as a fill flash and as long as the fill is within 20 degrees of the lens then it qualifies as a fill. So what is to be gained by having your 550 on a light stand inches from the camera?

Rather than inches, we might say *feet*. You can stretch the cord out about two feet. That is appropriate for use on a flash bracket.
If you need to set the flash unit really off, like five feet to the side, then use a master on the camera and set the slave flashes five feet to each side.

---Bob Gross---I've got that cord and when it's attached to my 550 in a Stroboframe Pro-T bracket there's very little slack. Now I can get more length to the cord but I've added tension. That tension is going to pull things together, as in pulling over a stand; as well as stressing out the cord itself. So I stand by my reference of inches, not feet.

Good stands, if properly erected, don't get pulled over.

I guess I don't have good stands. Just light, portable stands that I can easily carry with me on assignments.

you can attach the stand to a tripod, then it's stable enough to strech the cord.
