I currently only have 50meg available to me through my web host (get it free through family). I am toying with the idea of using my cable providers file storage for sotrage of all my files. I keep failing all the ftp tests however I can manually ftp any file I like. The downside of this would be that I have to manually resize every image for thumbs micros and the rest.
Has anyone done this successfully? How does EE know when I upload files to to another server other than my "localhost"? Would I still need my "UPLOAD" folder?

There are two kinds of "uploads" in EE.
1. When you send files to EE upload folder in upload editor.
2. when you hit the upload button (the actual upload).
First one is a storage for source photos (photos which are resized and then uploaded). This folder must be inside admin folder.
The second one can send files anywhere, just define ftp server and set paths to use it. Each photo size for each photo in EE is retrieved from "size path" and uploaded to size path. Each size path can by anywhere in the net, and must be accessible by ftp and http.
In EE 1.5 there is also a relative path for thumbs - forget it, it's gone in next version.
Ftp is usually firewalled in some way. Change the ftp engine to "EE internal" so that you get better messages where the problem is: is there connection to the server (firewall), is password and username ok, is test folder ok (access permission allowed).
