I am fairly new to digital photography having owned an EOS Rebel for less than a week. While exploring Photoshop Components it appears it will not support 16 bit TIFF files created by the Canon file viewer. Is that so? Does this mean I will need the "full" version of Photoshop to work with 16 bit files?

I assume you are talking about Photoshop Elements. It is true that this does not support 16bit image mode. If you can find a copy of Photoshop LE (formerly bundled with many cameras and scanners), that does support 16bit, otherwise you will need the full Photoshop. There are other image editors that support 16bit, e.g. Picture Window.

Bruce, from my reading of the APS user forum, the new Version 8.0 (or CS as Adobe call it) will have much better 16 bit file handling. This along with RAW file handling for the 10D should be most welcome.

Well, that's good to know. I think I will be getting the full version after a while but right now I'm just beginning to explore the Photoshop Elements program. I have already managed to do some things which would be very hard to do in a regular darkroom and so I am impressed. I have done negative-positive color printing in the darkroom for a number of years and so I find the contrast quite interesting. My next step will be to get a printer and see what sort of paper prints I can turn out. The initial results from my new Rebel look very nice on the computer screen but for me, I won't really know what I have until I can see some of the shots on paper.

Ah, Ha! Well, I'm at least glad I wasn't missing something. I guess I will stick with 8 bit for now until I get a printer and learn a bit more about what I'm doing. Thanks for the information.

Even in the full version of photoshop, you can do very little with 16 bit tiffs.. you might as well just convert to 8bit.
