I know this may be too premature to ask, but does anyone know if and when the 40D may be coming out. Or, how long has it taken Canon to make the next "D" in line, like from the 10D - 20D - 30D? Because next summer, not this upcoming, but the following, i plan to buy a "D". I like to 30D right now, but i am wondering that if i buy the 30D next summer, would it be a waste of money that the 40D would come out in a few days or weeks? So does anyone have any ideas?

There is a Rumors section to discuss these topics. I am sure a Mod will move this for you.

They do discuss future plans in the rumors section. That being said it seems like there is about an 18 month product cycle so far.

If you are looking to buy next summer the 30d might be towards the end of its run.

I guess I would look at it differently. If you do not buy for another year waiting for the next camera to come out you are not saving money you are wasting precious shooting time.

I'm not necessarily wasting my shooting time, since i'm happy with my present camera, the G6. I just want to bump up to a DSLR when i go to college that summer. But as of now, the G6 is fine for what i'm using it for.

Well said rklepper I agree with you fully. If it involves electronics wether it be camera's or computers etc. If you don't buy you spend ur life waiting on the updated version, its part of the fun of always playing catch-up.

Hmm...well...I may be a noob at predicting what Canon can do, but really, if you look at the upgrades from the 20D to the 30D, there really aren't that many, and since the 30D is an absolutely great camera, I can't see much to improve (but there's probably lots). I wouldn't hold back, worse comes to worse, you can trade in and put a little extra cash on top for that 40D.

mknabster,
if you get the dslr now, by the time you start colledge you'll be comfortable with it, instead of starting colledge and startijng anew camera. Just an idea.

You know....when our company reinvested money into camera bodies... I tried the 30D... and although the extra ISO stops were "nice" I found myself sticking to what I used with the 20D. And the extra large LCD screen I found to be a little soft looking (plus, I really just use the histogram anyway). So, for the extra money, I let my partner keep the 30D's, and I went and got another 20D.... which, for me actually feels a little more solid, and I trust it! Not that the 30D is bad... but, for the extra money... I didn't see the difference. Not for the work we do anyway. It wasn't like we spent the money on a 1DsMarkIIn.... so we put the cash towards duplicating the 100-400 and the 70-200 2.8's... just made more sense... so unless a 40D is earth-shattering with a new Digic processor or faster bursts.... I'd wait a bit... even contemplated the 5D FF, but it didn't have a fast enough burst rate for sports... (which stunk, because THAT I would have bought).

I agree with the above, also if you wait 12 months for the 40D then you'll wait another 18 months just in case the 50D comes out then the 60D 70D 80D

You'll NEVER have a camera

If you look at announcement patterns for the "next generation" of the 10D series, the replacement for the 30D (possibly called a 40D) would be available around April or May 2007.

You need at least some months to get used to your new camera, especially when you switch to a SLR. So buy what you can get now, and start shooting....
I own the 20D and it is still the leading camera for all purposes. The eye of the photographer and the lens makes the picture, not the camera...
