I have a question on this contest. If you read the rules, they state that "all entries become the property of COSTCO". You have to agree to this in order to participate.

What bothers me is that they do not say, winning entries, which even though I do not agree with I can clearly understand. However, I do not believe that just for entering you should just relinquish rights. Specially if you do not win since you may want to enter that pictire in a different contest.

My question is to primarily the senior members, or professionals, or people who have had more experience with this sort of thing, is it worth relinquishing all rights just to enter, I mean if I won any of the prices it could make a bit more sense, but not sure I want to relinquish all rights just for the priviledge of entering. Mind you that $2500 carrot and the idea of being published or if nothing else ackowledge is extremely tempting.

Comments, Ideas, suggestions, opinions, on how to handle this for us newbbies.

BTW for anyone interested the contest runs until September 30, 2006 ND Cn be enterwd online.

I wouldn't worry about it:

Rule #10: "All entries become the property of Costco. Receipt of entries cannot be acknowledged and entries cannot be returned. Costco assumes no responsibility for submitted photographs."

Now, if you send them a print, they can keep it; it's their "property". They don't return photos because, in a contest of this size, mailing entries back could cost some serious coin.

I don't see them laying claim to the image itself or the likeness in the photo.

But, even if they do, if they're unable to acknowledge the entry, then they cannot reasonably expect you to assume that the entry was received and entered.

Also, if you look at Rule #6, it says "Previously published photographs are acceptable." Now, if someone has had a photo previously published, nothing Costco can do will ever keep whoever published it from running it again if they choose to do so.

I wouldn't sweat it...
