Nice capture of a beautiful heron. I would love to see one of these and I guess I will have to go to Florida to do just that. Thanks for sharing!

are you sure that this is a tricolor heron? i have seen a tricolor and it looked nothing like this one but of course, i may be wrong (very likely)

Thanks, Gary - this was in South Carolina so maybe you don't have to go all the way to Florida!
Blonde, I am not sure as I am a novice birder - just started last week as a matter of fact. There was a somewhat experienced birder guiding us but she rattled off so many names I could not keep up. I have an old Golden Books field guide (from 1966) and searched online to confirm the identification and thought the coloring, red eyes and whitish beak gave it away...of course I am likely not correct if there is any question. Here is a link that helped:

What did the one you saw look like?

Yes Blonde it is indeed a Tri-Colored Heron. I have photographed many of these in my part of Florida.
Very nice capture of this Tri-Color EJ . I beleive that this may be the breeding colors for the bird. Nice detailed capture.

That is a gorgeous shot, love the colors and sharpness. And it is a Tricolored Heron, formerly known as Lousiana Heron. I saw one just yesterday in Cape May NJ. They are so beautiful. I'd love to get close enough to get a shot like this but it is unlikely here.

Blonde,
I think the excellent capture on your website might be a green heron - see here:
