Ray Scott is a country singer/songwriter on the Nashville to You Acoustic Radio Tour that my friend Rick Barker produces. I shot him at the Maverick Saloon & Grill in Santa Maria California on May 17th, 2006. This is another example of using Custom Whilte Balance ... the lighting was orange!

very nice as usual. I like the genuine smile in the second picture.

Thanks, Kalle. It is interesting that I just got a very similar comment from one of the gals at the radio station that sponsors Nashville to You about an hour ago. I liked the eyes in #1 and the smile in #2. I just liked #3 but am not sure why ... probably just good composition and exposure.

Great shots. I like one and two for the same reasons. It's a pity that the left eye falls out of the dof (edit - in 2). I can't help but think the shot would be improved if both were crisp. Can't help the lighting conditions though!

Once again fantastic photos Dwight.
Which of your camera bodies do you usually shoot with?

Brad, thank you. I am work so don't have the EXIF but I think that was with 300mm f/2.8 with 1.4 or 2.0 TC on tripod and pretty wide open because of the light. I agree that it would have nicer to have it all in focus but then I would likely have had motion blur on both eyes instead ... I have a couple of hundred with that problem! :-)
Richard, thank you. I usually shoot with the 1D Mark IIN when I have a choice, simply because it has the biggest LCD ... I can read it without my glasses when making settings. However I usually have both bodies in opeation, as here, with one on tripod and the other with 70-200mm f/2.8L IS in hand while walking around. If you go to my website you can see that I shoot from left, center and right as well as from the tripod which is back and right of center (near the bull).
Oh, an edit ... I will be shooting Taylor Swift there on Friday night ... I think she is 16 with the voice of an angel ... I will eventually have pictures here.

Beautiful shots, Dwight.
You say the lighting was orange... what exactly did you do to compensate? (Bit of a newbie question, but I had a problem with orange lighting at a recent gig)
Thanks!

Thank you. Yes, the lighting was from incandescent "cans" with warming gels giving a quite orange cast. I put up a little "demo" of what using Custom White Balance can do in this sort of situation a while back at http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=157316 ... watch out if you read it ... the RAW bigots can never leave such discussions alone so they pulled this off track a bit. I am shooting Taylor Swift Friday night and plan to shoot some test shots: AWB, Incandescent and CWB to show the differences.

Amazingly clear with fantastic natural skin tones.
Would you mind, Dwight, taking a moment to detail your conversion to the web for posting? When I convert raw to jpeg to save for web, my skin tones get completely washed out and look like alabaster.
thanks,
mark

I shoot jpegs and I use PhotoImpact 11. I have no concept of "save for the web" ... I don't go through PhotoImpact's web optimization. It is much more important to me that the images look great than the bandwidth or storage space they require ... so my images seen here are often 300KB or more ... very little compression, although those in this gallery are close to 250KB since I am processing them with Porta.

Any chance you're using a wide color space such as AdobeRGB and not converting to sRGB before posting to web?
