I was looking to invest in the Canon EOS 1ds Mark II but a friend of mine advised me not to because he said that Canon is putting out a new camera come September or October boasting upwards of 22 megapixels.
Is there any fact to this or is he just making **** up as he goes?
I need to know because this will weigh heavily on my future camera purchase.

Get him to state his source.. otherwise treat it just like any other rumour :p
'sides, the resale value of a 1DsmkII is still going to be pretty darn good :p

There is ALWAYS going to be another new camera coming out soon. You will ALWAYS be one step behind with technolgy nowadays anyway. As people have said before, if you wait, imagine the shots you miss. Go get what ever you want now.

Could very well be true. No one really knows which way Canon will go. The MP should be easy for them to achieve but I'm sure they also have a whole host of other upgrades they would also like to include in the new 1DS bodies. Just don't fall into the trap of continually waiting for the latest - there'll be a newer model and you'll end up spending more time waiting than shooting.
Oh and welcome to the forums :)

I very much doubt that, from what I've heard Canon won't be coming out with any more major upgrades until 2007, of course like your 22mp camera that too is just a rumour<g>. Having said that the real world difference between 16 and 22 mp is likely pretty insignifigant.

I think the 5D costs too much! I could get a great TV for that price.

LOL! I'm so consumed with shooting and participating in forums that I don't even watch television anymore.

For what it offers and compared to the only other FF option the 5D is a bargain.

It's still too expensive in my opinion even at $2,500. If it came down another $500. I'd consider it. The 30D has 24 Bit RGB JPEG
I'm wondering about the Color Depth. My 10D has 36Bit RGB, and I did notice that the Color Depth on the 5D did also. I am assuming that it has to do with the JPEG and not the RAW and that the 1ds have the 36Bit RGB too? Does it say anything about the Color Depth for the RAW on the 1ds? Diane

dunno what all that stuff is ur talking about! but what nation is saying is that it is the only other full frame alternative. i think thats pretty valuable... all your lenses will now behave as designed... warts and all hehe.

The speculation that Canon will release a 22MP 8FPS camera this fall is based on two facts.
1- statements by Canon reps that they would have produced a 22MP 8FPS camera if they could have, but since they couldn't they produced the 1D and 1Ds series. However they do plan on someday merging the two lines (this is all from Canon reps)
2. So far to date timing on releases of upgrades has followed a cycle. Based on that cycle the next camera scheduled for release is the 1DsMkII and the fall Photokina show would be the most likely time.
Now based on technology Canon should be able to achieve a 22MP 8FPS DSLR in the $8000 or less range of the 1DsMkII, so this is quite possible by this fall.
Now other rumors and speculation have indicated that Canon may be holding off on the new camera or may a different camera under the following speculation and rumors
- Canon is coming out with a 22MP high-speed crop camera
- Canon is coming out with a 12MP 10FPS camera besed on a different mirror setup they have used before
- Canon has no competition so they are reaping the benefits and waiting until Spring
- Canon is having problems with the new design so they are waiting until Spring
- Canon is spending their efforts on a new lens design (ignoring for a moment that the lens design teams would be mostly different from the camera design teams) so they will not have a new camera, except minor upgrades for awhile.
- Since Canon only released the 30D at the same pixels as 20D, sensors have peaked out so they won't be releasing anything bigger then 16.7MP (this ignores that the 20/30D have a greater pixel density then the 1DsMkII would have if it had 22MP).
- Canon is only planing on a minor upgrade like the 1DM2N for the 1DsMkII.
I think that covers all the rumors and speculation.
I am of the opinion that the most reliabe speculation at this point indicates:
- either a 22MP 8FPS camera (with or without crop capability - I lean to without) in the Fall (or possibly in the Spring).
- Or a perhaps the 1DsRs I think it was called with the 12+MP at 10FPS. I could see this one happening.
I lean towards the first one though and have been saving towards it. Right now I could actually use a delay until Spring.

1Ds shown at Photokina 2002.
1Ds MK II shown at Photokina 2004.
I would think that Canon would want the next 1Ds at Photokina 2006.
I am sure they will have something at this show. Only three months or so to wait. If you don't need a camera now I would say go ahead and wait/

I'm hearing 16bit from multiple sources. Different Megapixel numbers, but everyone says 16bit.
Anyone else hear anything about bit depth? I'm not so concerned with how many megapixels, but 16bit would be major.
