OK.. this is a good one. I heard it from someone who does have a very extensive photography background and who SHOULD know what he is talking about ;)

But as always it is a rumor.. take it with requisite pinch or shaker of salt. (can I get some pepper with that..)

The comment was that Canon might be planning a 14-35 in EF format as an ultra-wide zoom, and the rationale was that since they already have the 10-22 for EF-S, the 14-35 would not be targeted at crop cameras because it would not produce meaningful results (22-56mm on 1.6X, which isn't as wide as the 16-35 equiv. the 10-22 already offers). However it would give full frame shooters unrivalled (in the Canon zoom lineup) ultrawide coverage that previously required us to buy the expensive 14mm prime. It would also give 1.3X shooters a little more wide (18-45mm).

It doesn't seem all TOO farfetched since Sigma has a 12-24 full frame that has been used with the 5D with amazing results, but I am not really sure that Canon is in such a hurry to kill off the 16-35, which this lens will. He hoped that it would be f/2.8 constant, but don't we all.

The BAD part is that if Canon actually does come out with such a beast, I will be relieved of even MORE of my money since I am a BIG ultrawide fan..

I like this rumor, but only if it is at least an f2.8 lens and has image quality of at least as good as the 16-35 does at 16mm while at 14mm wide open. I figure then it would be better then 16-35 at that point and might be worth the price - depending on the price. But if not f2.8 and not better IQ then the 16-35, then I can't see me worrying about it much.

But it would fall in line with the rumors of superior lenses coming down the pipe.

I would really like to see this lens/rumor come true because I am in the market right now for the 16-35 or 14mm, but if they came out with the 14-35 that would solve my issue with the wide angle lens.

It won't effect sales of the 16-35mm f/2.8L unless it is an f/2.8L as well.. which I doubt they are considering.

It's aperture is likely to be in line with the Sigma .. and 10-22mm.. ie f/4-5.6 ?
Especially given the statement
it would give full frame shooters unrivalled (in the Canon zoom lineup) ultrawide coverage that previously required us to buy the expensive 14mm prime.

Oh why oh why can't they just make an affordable ultrawide EF prime?
I'd love a 14mm f/4 or f/4.5 just fine.

It would be nice if it could sit in between the 17-40 and 16-35 in terms of aperture and pricing. I would upgrade for that. :)

And superb image quality is expected - goes without saying. My guess is that it is likely to be an L, since exotic glass and exotic elements are already required in the construction of this class of lens. And since it's EF full frame, there's no reason why they can't give it the full L treatment.

sounds like an f4 because of the rumour of them scrapping the 17-40mm, why rival a pretty good lense when they switch out a cheaper one.
