It was suggested to me recently, because I've been struggling with flash (430ex) on my 10-D, to shoot entirely in manual--camera and flash--with the aid of a flash meter. I've been shooting for many many years and have never used a flash meter. It arrived today (can I mention a non-Canon product in this forum?) I know for sure I'm in over my head now. Too much math. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Are you just using one 430EX flash that is used on the camera?
If so, I am not sure why you would need a flashmeter, especially with a digital camera where you can review the exposures and histogram. Possibly you are using the 430EX with your camera in a manner that I have not considered.
Also, why do you think that you cannot mention brandnames other than Canon on this forum. Just have at it.
Just to get you going, Nikon, Exacta, Sekonic, Tide, Mr. Bubble, Spam, Rasin Brain, Lexan, Coolwhip, Ronco, and a couple of favorites Pace and Carborundum.
Enjoy! Lon

Thanks, Lon! lol!
I'm sorting all of this out. Seems the meter was way off course, it is now back in the box, on its way back to nyc!
Yes, I'm only using one 430ex. I have learned that others have had problems with underexposure using auto modes/auto flash, and now understand a little better what I'm dealing with. I think FEC and the histogram will do the trick. Am playing with AV+ettl+FEC; P+ettl+FEC; M+ettl; M+manual flash. Learning a lot.
