Is there a equivalent to the Canon 24-70 that does not extend when zooming or focusing ? preferably f 2.8 or better.

Good question
The Sigma extenst while zooming
The Tamron extends while zooming and is not internal focus
I was alset to say a big nope when I remembered the Tokina 28-70 ATX-Pro. Now I am not sure if this one extends when zooming or not - may be worth investigating?

I don't believe there are that many zoom lenses out there which do not extend when you change their focal length.. there are quite a few which do not extend during focusing (my 17-85 even). I can't really comment on any 24-70s regarding that though as I haven't owned any.
Curious.. Why do you want to avoid them extending? Primes are good for that (50mm 1.4?)

The 50 1.4 extends a little bit while focusing. :(

I just like the non-extending lenses. Seems like it it safer to have all the moving parts inside so to speak. The Canon 24-70 is sealed so probably it shouldn't matter but I just would like to know. The other might not be up to Canons spec regarding sealing ?

the canon ef 24-70mm DOES extend when zooming!

I know :) That's why I asked the question in the first place.

Doesn't move an inch or make a peep while focusing, though. I wouldn't want one that didn't move while zooming, though. Makes the hood virtually useless, and subjects it to flare and/or vignetting issues.

Is there a equivalent to the Canon 24-70 that does not extend when zooming or focusing ? preferably f 2.8 or better. The Canon 24-70 and its hood are, by far, the best possible design ever when it comes to the way the hood works on the lens.
The lens extends when going toward the shorter focal lengths. The hood mounts to the non-moving body of the lens, and not to the (much more fragile) inner works via a filter thread.
The result is that the hood is ideal for all focal lengths when it comes to protecting against stray light. Because the hood mounts on the body of the lens, it is also MUCH better than any filter-ring-mounted hood in terms of protecting the lens against impact forces.
No other brand of lens, and no other Canon lens except for the 28-70 predecessor, use this extremely good design.
If it's the appearance that you are concerned with, just put the hood on (which you should ALWAYS do with any lens). The overall length - the visible length to onlookers - will not change when you are zooming. As said before, the length does not change with focussing.

Yes the Tokina ATX 280 AF Pro is a 28-80mm f/2.8 lens that is internal focusing and does not change length while zooming. I tried a copy of this lens and wasn't happy with it at all. With the aperture wide open, photos were VERY soft at all focal lengths with my 10D. Worse still, you can see the softness without pixel peeping. I shot some photos side by side with my Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 and the Tamron blew it away. I was hoping that the Tokina would be a step up from the Tamron, but in this aspect it wasn't. Instead I saved my money and eventually bought Canon's EF 24-70 f/2.8L.
My only regret was not saving the photos I took for comparison so that I can share them here. I won't knock all Tokina lenses, I loved their 12-24 f/4... too bad it just was just too wide for my 1D MkI.

Thank you SkipD. I didn't realise it was such a clever design. It is hard to see just from pictures of the lens. I'll add it to my shopping spree at B&H this week...
Thanks GeneMan88 for ruling out the Tokina.
