Hi friends,
Well I took your advice and got the 30d. I went out shooting and I had a lot of fun.
Tell me what you think? I am still getting used to the camera and I would love your site. (pardon the watermarks. I have problems with people stealing my work)

I'd guess that the 'look' of the photos comes from the post-processing...would be interested to know what you workflow was.

Well, I don't want to sound bad but, I doubt those were taken with the 30D, for a start, no exif data, always very suspicious, then is the little copyright notice on the image but no copyright metadata, and of course the heavy use of multiple exposure mask and merge, sorry dude but you aint fooling me.
Nice "images" tho, I hope the guy you pinched them from doesn't come around here.

...wow! Thats a pretty bold accusation for only your 2nd post on this forum. Since when is the lack of EXIF data suspicious. The exif is easily removed in Photoshop by simply "saving for web." This is a very friendly forum as you will find if you stick around. Accusing one another of stealing images is not typically something that occurs here, because stealing images and claiming them as our own is not something that we do. I'm just not sure how lack of exif, multiple exposures and a watermark add up to the accusation of theft. That might be an accusation you would consider recounting. Ryan does have those images displayed on his blog as well: HERE (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=1752115)

Hey everyone! Wow that was quite the response from you guys/gals. I really appreciate your kind words. Most of the these photos are HDR with 3 exposures (two stops of light between them) blended together. I am SOOO happy with the 30d because it will actually take the 3 shots for you in something like .6 secs so your subject doesnt have time to move. I did some photoshopping to give priority to different parts of the picture that wouldn't look good blended. For Instance, the water from the water fountain is only 1 exposure.
As far as lenses go, I haven't received my ebay purchases yet so i am still using the kit 18-55. Anyone have any suggestions for lenses? I am thinking about just getting some nice fixed lenses. I found myself wishing I could go a little wider than 18mm yesterday.
Thanks!
Ryan Flynn
PS I didnt steal these photos. They are just saved for web. haha sorry Igadiz you have been fooled.

I did not mean to sound that harsh, is just that I do mark my images with a copyright mark in both the image and the metadata, so If I don't see, metadata copyright info, I get suspicious, If they are his images and this was just an oversight, my most humble apologies. As with regards of the doubt of camera use, well it was not the camera that created those images, it was created with a series of merged images, He should make that clear, so as to not confuse newbie’s in to thinking "wow I must get that camera look at what wonderful images it takes".

I do asked for what and have never turned anyone down.Looks fine to me very creative in shots and never helps to have beautiful subject or model. Like any image they could be better. Just like any new lens or new camera learn the strong and weakness of it.

Ryan, I wouldn't worry about the copyright through your image and I wouldn't waste my time with digimarc, unless you plan to pursue offenders and prosecute. People are going to steal your stuff if its good regardless of what you do, mostly because the general public is largely unaware of copyright issues when it comes to photography...even if they were aware, many wouldn't care. With your copyright/name on the image at least they are advertising for you! :) You might consider moving the copyright to a slightly less distracting location, but I don't think this looks all that bad to be honest. ...amazing images by the way. I have yet to mess with HDR, as it just doesn't strike me as working well or easily with portraits/weddings, which is mostly what I do. ...perhaps, I'm wrong though. Can you give us an idea of what kind of time it takes to produce one image like this in HDR?

Hey man, thats what I am starting to realize. People will steal no matter what. Yeah I am ok with people displaying, but i have had trouble with people actually printing and reselling my work.
HDR. Yeah its a beautiful thing. I am still learning it myself, but you should check out a program called photomatix I think you can get it at hdrsoft.com.
If you use exposure bracketing you may be able to use it for portraits, because the exposures happen so quickly.
Talk to you soon!

Mmm.. I beg to disagree with you, digimark is a very useful piece of software, it tracks the usage of your images for both illegal and legal use, also it informs possible costumers of who took the picture and provides them with contact information.
The fact is, most people are very much aware of copyrights and what they involve.
If you are making a living with your images or want to do so in the near future, marking your images and protecting them is a must, copyright theft is a serious problem in our industry and giving the advice you just posted is just irresponsible.
We must stride to eradicate copyright theft, and this software is just one of the many tools available to us to do so.

My thoughts exactly Johnny V! Light it paint. I know thats a bit on the artsy side of things to say. I believe if your end result is what you were trying to express when you opened the shutter, the you are a successful artist.
There is something to be said about the skill of getting a good exposure though. For the record, only 5 of those shots are HDR.

I never heard a painter bragging about his brushes.
Look, stating that a camera took a picture when is a combination of several exposures is just wrong, IMO.
Each to it's own.

"I never heard a painter bragging about his brushes." HAHA well stated, but I do think you need to hang around more painters. I have heard many a conversation regarding advantages and disadvantages of different brushes.
Well man, only half were multiple exposures. I dont think its a problem to say a camera took a picture regardless of the way it took it. Its kind of like saying "thats not real photography because its not real film" Remember those days?

This post is a perfect example of why we should state the fact that, although the pictures were taken with a particular camera, the image is a composite of several exposures/enhancement via software.
These people (new to dslr) may get confused in to thinking the camera has more dynamic range that it really does.

"Just my 0.2$"
Who gave you 20 cents? We are clearly on a 2 cent budget. haha I going to be honest with you man. If you hand a 30d to someone who doesnt know how to use a camera, they will give you pictures that are pretty bad. If you use a crappy camera for HDR your pictures will also look pretty terrible.
These pictures are a finished project. Its like showing a finished house to show the strength and beauty of a certain type of wood... instead of a 2 by 4.
Personally, if i was in the market for a 30d I would love to see some of the stuff you can do with it. Of coarse I wont know how to set exposure bracketing or use photoshop right out of the box... but I would be more than willing to learn.

Hey friend! You can start of with Photomatix. Its a great exposure blending program with something called "tone mapping". Start there. You will have a blast.
Bracketing is a function of a camera to take a properly exposed photo(user defined) along with an under exposed and over exposed photo. This creates a large range in the light captured by the camera. :) When you blend them together it creates a really cool effect. If your camera doesn't have the ability to take the photos for you... just take a few photos and separate the exposures with a couple steps of light each. :)
Keep in mind that I am new to this whole HDR thing. Take what i tell you lightly and learn by experimenting!
I cant wait to see what you do!

Some of the best I've seen Dr. Flynn. I really like the compositions and colors you've achieved. I guess I'll have to give HDR another go...These are outstanding and an inspiration to try harder. BTW - the first image I tried it on had all exif data attached - and it said 30D.
And I've always been a big supporter of the kit lens. When used properly it is more than worth the $41 it added to the price of my 20D.

I never heard a painter bragging about his brushes.
Look, stating that a camera took a picture when is a combination of several exposures is just wrong, IMO.
Each to it's own.
I am not going to get in to silly arguments about it.

Dr.Flynn - You asked about Primes earlier, have alook at 'my stuff', it's exactly what I'd recommend if you're into primes, i.e. 35mm1.4, 50mm1.4,85mm1.8 (cos the faster 85 lens is BONKERS money! )
Do you use longer lenses? The choice just gets huge from 85mm upwards!

They are a TOTALLY 'NEW" look!
Gotta get into this, - at first I thought he had filtered them not particularily subtly (before I read they were HDR'd) and that he was trying to make them look like paintings ( cos they do) - so I was trying to suss out what filter he'd used - In fact my FIRST thought was that they were actually 3D composits
The only question is whether his level of quality is easily achievable by common bilgerats like me or whether you need to be a Da Vinci ( ack- where's me code? ) of the PP world

that is brilliant. i am actually about to order that 50m 1.4. How do you think it compares to the 1.8. I am also looking for something SUPER wide and not outrageous in price. Any suggestions?

Ryan, the 50 1.4 is AWESOME. I think if I had to, I could shoot everything with just that lens. I upgraded to it from the 1.8 and the differences really are worth it if you can swing the cost. The 1.8 is a super lens too and I used it for a long time before upgrading to the 1.4. I agree with Simon, the 851.8 is also a superb piece of glass. I'm finding now with my 70-200 2.8 that I use the 50 and the 85 less though. We'll see if I end up needing/wanting either of them in tomorrow's wedding... if not, I may look to sell one or both.

Super wide - on the 30D right?
Your choices are the 15mm - gives you the sharpest 24mm equiv for the 1.6 crop, but CA is pretty heavy - I tried one but theres no way to get rid of bendy horizons unless they're dead cantre of the shot (boring) As long as you have no essential straight lines it s a very good performer, reall sharp (for a 24mm equiv)
The 17-40f4L zoom and 16-35f2.8L zoom are ona par across the range with the 17-40 being better at the wide end and vica versa for the 16-35. I use the 17-40 zoom as a Prime 17mm, (rarely zooming) If speed's an issue then it 's the 16-35 as it';s one stop faster, if money's an issue the 17-40 ius a lot cheaper
The 10-22 has mixed reviews, it's a great performer up to a certain level of enlargement - I'll leave it at that. I tried one and eventually went for the 17-40 instead. You get the sweet spot (with the 17-40) with a crop camera and it's ( the 17-40 not the 10-22) at least as good as any prime of equal FL up to 28mm. That's my belief after EXTENSIVE research:D
A lot of people have gone for the Sigma choices at the very wide end. I know nothing about those lenses, others can advise you better
Re: the 50f1.4 v the 1.8
They're close but the 1.4 definitely has the edge. If money's tight though the 1.8 won't let you down

Curious about one thing, you said Sorry everyone. I had to take down the photos. 6megs of photos with almost 1000 views = a lot of transfer for my poor little .mac account
Can you actually use .mac to host photos? I've got a .mac account, but I've been hosting on photobucket because I couldn't figure out how to use .mac. Any hints will be appreciated.
Hope you don't mind if I stalk your blog. :)

I am going to have to try this for some night photos sometime. My favorite photo subject is the Empire State Building. I have had very limited luck shooting it at night when it is red, white, and blue because of the differences in the three colors. I think this would be an instance when HDR would be very useful.

Ryan, utterly blown away by what is clearly superlative talent, and slightly ashamed by an immediate sense of resentment, I had to google you.
My first evil thought/question is why you pretend to not know about equipment, or some of it anyway?! :p Your name came up on a Canon oriented web site, and your site "alantahatesus' shows someone who not only is a master of light, but must have some pretty good portable studio equipment. The DOF of a few OUTSTANDING portraits hints at a very fast lens as well as good studio equipment... The more straightforward you could be about what you are into and what you do, the more helpful, the oh-so-more helpful it would be.
I'm happy to have run into your thread and I'll keep an eye on your career. I think you've set the new benchmark for where I want to be, not from these HDR pictures, but from your portraits and outdoor work.
