View Full Version : POTN WORLDWIDE PHOTO DAY PART 15. 6/17-6/18-- SIDE BY SIDE
saravrose

Good morning folks, this weekends theme if side by side.. the idea is to shoot the same composition with two different perspectives, or in two different ways.. examples would be to use a flash, to not use a flash.. or with and without filters.. time to show us how the decision making process when you shoot happens, why you make the choices that you make and how it works for your final outcome.. Were not asking for the messed up vs. correct photo but merely, the same photo taken in two ways and what the differences are in the final result..
For any newcomers the rules are fairly simple. You have from sunup Saturday to sundown Sunday to get your shots. They should be posted by Monday.. in time for us to ooh and ahh.. and get started on the conversation about next week.. any question feel free to post.. there are enough participants that somebody will give you an answer fairly quickly.. Keep in mind that the main point is to shoot.. to get the camera out of the bag and take photos.. So, if you take a handful of shots with the theme in mind that's fabulous.. and if the rest of your memory is spent on a trail of ants then the POTN day has served it's purpose j/k.... good luck, and happy shooting..

So, as a few of you have noticed my little niece is a bit of a photographer in her own right... (see avatar). Anyway, through the summer i'm going to be babysitting and decided that Abby would be getting photography lessons, I figured with the age gap I might be able to teach her something.... So friday rolls around and we go out the Rose Garden, I let her shoot with my camera for a bit.. (I got to tell you her little hands make the XT look huge!) She's a little stubborn so talking her into taking a shot that I pointed out took some doing.. I heard a lot of 'But auntie you said I could pick which flowers by myself!!).. But, she did it when I told her it was for POTN.. okay, first is her take.. the second is mine.. personally, I like hers better...

Hehe how does it feel to be beaten by a seven-year old :p
I think You are right. Abby's has a little more depth.
But yours isn't bad.

strangely enough I'm not heartbroken.. :D but it's the whole kid thing, you want to see them do well I'm not sure who was more pleased me or her.. she came running in the house and told her grandmother how she learned to make 'blurry backgrounds' today...

I vote for Abby's, too. Not sure if it's the vertical composition, the slightly lower angle, or seeing more of the bush in the background -- whatever it is, she did quite well.
My nearly 7 year old shoots with a cheapo HP we got him for Christmas a couple of years ago. The thing looks like, and is built like a brick -- but it's saved me a ton in developing, and it's been fun to watch him grow. He wants to use my camera, too -- but without a solid tripod, the 20D is a bit too heavy for him.

Oh man ... now we have some competition here  I dunno if I can shoot this week since Abby turned up  Anyway, I dunno which I prefer. I would crop Abby's at the bottom and top a tad I think personally, but I think I prefer Sari's by a wee bit. Got a bit of a rule of thirds thing happenin' there.
Ok, shower first and then out I pop for my shooting ;)

Okay well Abby's blow mine away too no doubt. I found myself in the garden with the 150mm Macro hangin' off the camera again and I just love the colours of this Bromeliad flower.
Both were taken in late afternoon light with it's inevitable shadows.
First one: No flash, f/5.6, hand held, Av setting. PP = Levels + small amount of Unsharp Mask.
http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/548/bromeliad12sk.jpg
Second one: Composition slightly different, tripod mounted, mirror lockup, timer release, f/18, FILL flash (580ex) and same PP. In other words, I did most things you're supposed to do for macro.
Did it make much difference? Well you be the judge. I kinda like 'em both for different reasons.

Ok, my contribution is predicable for anyone who knows my   :p views on the value of expensive gear.
Here are two lenses, my most expensive and my most inexpensive. Go onto eBay today (a perfect marketplace) and you will grab a Canon 24-105mm 4.0 IS L for around £740 including delivery (SH not much less!) via a decent Hong Kong seller. You will almost certainly grab a classic SH Helios-44 58mm 2.0 for around £6.00 delivered. Do a currency conversion here (http://www.xe.com/ucc/) ... the differenc in price is absurd
This isn't meant as a good composition or an interesting subject, that wasn't the point. I wanted something quick and easy to illustrate texture detail, contrast, colour, sharpness and bokah.
Both shot within a minute or so of each other. IS left on and using AF with the Canon and, of course, no IS possible with the Helios (couldn't be bothered with the tripod!), and it also needed MF ;) Both at f5.6, ISO 100, 58mm, and using Av mode. Not meant as a perfect test; just some fun ;) Picked the best shot from each.
Post processing identical. Imported RAW via DPP and immediate upload as TIFF to PS CS2. Auto White Balance setting and no changes in WB or exposure via DPP. Open full size. USM 100/1/0. Auto contrast and auto levels. USM 100/1/0. Resize 800. No crop. Run Mikes Framer Script which frames and reduces again to 600px. Save for web at 90% JPG. Exactly the same as I do with 95% of my shots. No curves or saturation.
Which is which?

Oh You are mean :p
I have no idea which is which so I wouldn't dare a guess. But there is slight differences.
There is a very visible difference in color on the gravestone way in the back.
Bottom photo seem to have more blown highlights than the top.
It looks like the top one has more blurr/bokeh than the bottom.
So I think my preference is the top one. But I don't know if that was shot with the L or not.

So far some fun comparrisons. Personally, I know what I'm going to shoot, waiting for the late afternoon, early evening light to go do the shoot. That being said...
Sari - have to agree, Abby's picture has more depth, but; I would use yours to try a PP sandwich technique I just read about this morning in Bryan Peterson's book, "Understanding Digital Photography".
MeatyO - I like your first picture better, deeper colors. I would also like the opportunity to see that flower up close and in person. It looks beautiful, very similar in color to many of the hybrid fuschias up here.
Condyk - No clue which is which, however; personal preference would be #1. Seems to have more depth in the engraving giving a sharper appearance.

Wow! Some beautiful shots!
Sari, I do like Abby's composition better. Quite a little photographer you've got on your hands there!
MeatyO, that is gorgeous! I think I like the handheld one better. The colors are gorgeous!
Condyk, I have no idea which is which. I like the background better in the first, but I like the tombstone in the foreground better in the second. But for the difference in price, I would say the cheaper lens is quite a bargain!
Here's my contribution for this week. They were taken at the top of Mount Monadnack in Southern New Hampshire. The first one is without a CP, the second one with. The only PP was to resize and add some USM to both.

I think we'll see lots of fun side by side things today. I took the easy way out, choose a photo I took on Friday evening and decided to have it in colour and then play around in PS. I converted it to B&W using a plugin. Then I played around with it's special effects and added some more colour to the image. After that I added grain to the photo, upped the contrast a bit and burnt some parts of her top.
:)

Claire: What a great shot! I like the colour much better, simply because the subject is "modern" (to me anyway) and the conversion and noise gives the second one that "Old World" feel...which seems out of place. Did you use flash for the shot?
BeccaNH: I find the colours in the second one to be deeper and the clouds have a little more definition. Hmmm...lesson learned...must use my CP for all landscapes with sky in them!
Condyk: For a minute there, I thought that was "THE" Sir Joseph Banks' tombstone, until I saw the dates. Since the exposures are different, I'd say one lens isn't giving you a "true" f/5.6...probably the cheap lens. So by that logic, the lower image, being slightly overexposed in the background, would have to be the cheaper lens. But really, it's hard to tell.
As for the cheap Vs dear lens argument...I realised how good the cheap lenses are when I started scanning some of my sister's old slides from the seventies...great pictures and shot with a lens
with just ONE glass element...yes ONE!
Perhaps that would be a good challenge. Find a slide or photo, the oldest you have, and then take a similar picture using our camera and compare them to see how far we've really come.

Meaty,
No flash. Don't own one. ;) Stood by the stage and just fired off my 70-300mm. Of course I was stupid enough to forget to up the ISO more further into the concert, so got quite a few blurry shots. Typical me. Usually the ISO is the first thing I think off, but of course not this time. I posted a few shots in the "Performing Arts" forum.

Ok lads and ladies time to reveal the answer to which is better. Is it the £750 L or the £6 Helios. Well, I agree with Becca about the foreground/background "I like the background better in the first, but I like the tombstone in the foreground better in the second."
The truth is that the top one, which you all assumed was the L, is actually the Helios   Remember, this kinda old stuff has been taking great portraits and other shots for decades. Tried and tested. Good to own, whether or not you're skint ;) But that doesn't mean that my 24-105mm and 15-30mm aren't my first choices for general use. AF and zooming, when all else is pretty much equal, really does make life much easier.

Price aside, something has to be said about the zoom holding up so well against the prime. And the reason the price is so low on those MF lenses is exactly that...MF. Everyone's into AF now, especially considering the difficulty to manually focus on most crop cameras.

Sure ... convenience is why my most used lenses are AF and zooms. But add a split screen to a crop body and MF becomes very easy. Most people can build a very nice collection of glass that will produce superb IQ without getting dragged into the whole L Fever thing. Great shots for little money is what many people want.
Once the sobbing stops, I'll get my tush in gear and diagnose the problem.
Shame Wu, that sounds bad news. I hope there is a simple solution. I like the first shot.

Sorry Sari I could not find a trail of ants otherwise I would have posted a photo of that :p
I just returned from a 5 hour hike in the nature reserve where I shot last weeks photo. I was hoping I could find something original that would fit the theme.
Just to illustrate what I went through to find todays photos here is a shot of a sign I met many times on my hike. The text is danish but I think You can all guess what it means.
http://photo.klein-jensen.dk/photo2.php?n=060618_sidebyside0.jpg
After about 3,5 hours walk something came floating through the air. I think it was 2 geese. Not in any way a great photo but at least it is side by side.
http://photo.klein-jensen.dk/photo2.php?n=060618_sidebyside1.jpg
Oh well I guess I have to take the easy way out and just use one of the photos I shot early on the walk at the Kestrel nest. The young kestrels are really growing and I think it is a matter of days or hours before they start to fly. While I was there one of them looked like he/she was about to take the plunge. (More photos from there will be posted in the bird forum).

I could have given you a pic of ants this morning if my camera worked. Woke up to an invasion of them! Hate causing death to anything but those critters had to go. Went to the farm supply store and bought Terro, applied it, they swarmed it, and now they are all gone. If any return and the camera decides to cooperate I'll grab a few shots-- give me a chance to use some of the macro stuff I've bought.
If you want a giggle, go look at a package of that stuff and read the types of ants it is good for getting rid of. I was standing in line to check out reading it and giggling- not quite to myself. :D Oh well, I think most of the town is pretty used to the crazy soc prof by now.
There are some fine pictures this time (as usual) and interesting interpretations to the theme. Tommy, the photo of the Kestrels in phenomenal.! excellent job.

It appears to be the AF Mirror problem. I think it may be time to make the Drebel a doorstop and hope the new semester gets here SOON!! 'til then I'll flip that mirror when needed and rely on manual focus for a while. Never did like the job AF did anyway.
Thanks for the comment on shot #1- you should have seen everything after the camera malfunctioned: the wind stopped blowing, the reflections popped, the sunset was spectacular . . . . rather like the universe was just rubbing it in ;) :D

Went out last evening hoping to do a side by side using my CP filter, after sunny blue skies all day, figured that would make a good comparrison. Wouldn't you know, typical to the mid-west on a hot afternoon, come evening it got hazy and storm clouds began to roll in. So took these shots instead using different shutter speeds.
One thing to note, across the mill race they are remodeling the outdoor ampitheater, terraceing it for nicer lawn chair seating. This explains the construction materials on the opposite bank.
Both taken with 300D; Tamron 28-75; 2.4
#1. f 2.8; 1/250; ISO 100 got the stop action on this little water fall in our local mill race
http://performancephoto.us/images/Beckysgallery/Side%20by%20Side%20Stop.jpg
#2. f 11; 1/15 ISO 100 a little water flow action going on now
http://performancephoto.us/images/Beckysgallery/Side%20by%20Side%20Action.jpg
I also took slower speeds but found this one to be the most appealing. The stop action just doesn't do it for me, the slower speeds would be very nice in a larger fall where a more surreal look might be in order.

A happy belated Father's Day to anyone eligible.:D
Looks like we had some great fun this past weekend. I am going to take a page out of BeckyN's book and comment on all the shots so far.
Sari-I have to agree with the others that I like Abby's pic a little better.
Meaty0- I just got my 430EX about 3 weeks ago and have used it almost non-stop. Flashes should be a mandatory purchase with the camera. The second shot is fabulous.
condyk-Dave I am not even going to try and guess which is which but I like to first the best. The highlights are blown a little in the second shot. Probably just a different angle or slightly brighter at that time.
EDIT: Just read that the first is the cheaper lens. How about that?:)
BeccaNH- That CPL produced a better image IMO. The color of the sky and the table has really changed.
Claire- Great shot! I like the color version the best though.
cdi-Don. Nice spin on the theme there. Took me a second to figure out what you meant.
wu-wei0- Sorry about the camera.:( Looks like you would have had an interesting shot though.
Tommy- Very nice shot of the youngsters there. They have really grown.
Joayne- Very interesting "mask" there.
BeckyN- Great display of slow shutter speed and moving water.
Kerry-For this particular shot I like the B&W best.
For my shots I wasn't sure exactly what I wanted to do, but as my family and I were sitting around my in-laws pool yesterday afternoon the shot came to me. I wanted to show what DOF can do for a particular subject. EXIF is on the frame. The first really isolates the foreground and the sunblock and shades. The second brings the background into focus showing that the sign in the back right reads "Cindy's Pond" for my mother-in-law. Both shots used a little fill flash for the sunblock and shades.

I won't bore you with the story -- but this is the third time I've tried to post these pics. The last two involved computers locking up for no clear reason. Now -- on to it before something else breaks.
Both shots are hosted at the new Picasa Web Albums beta -- so apologies for any technical issues that may come up. I just started testing it out today.
Both shots taken handheld in full afternoon sun with a southern exposure. LIke others, I was playing with DOF. I'd say more, but I'm afraid I'll break something and have to start over again for the fourth time.

Thank you David, after looking at both shots i'm reassured that i've saved myself £746:p

Sorry to be so late to the party, but here are my two pictures.
I just happened by this bronze statue and wasn't sure how to approach it. I just walked up and started messing around and I ended up with these two pictures:
http://www.vinceanido.com/gallery/d/2151-2/IMG_0378.JPG (http://www.vinceanido.com/blog/v/Photography/30in30/IMG_0378.JPG.html)
http://www.vinceanido.com/gallery/d/2161-2/IMG_0380.JPG (http://www.vinceanido.com/blog/v/Photography/POTN/IMG_0380.JPG.html)
I decided that I liked the first one more and posted it to my 30 days section, but it happened to be the first picture I took of the statue. I'm finding this is becoming more common as I continue my 30 day challenge and as I start to think more, I over-work the subject.
I feel like I need to go with my gut more, and just see what happens, rather than trying to work really hard and make that perfect shot happen - it's better to let it happen to you.
OK, enough philosophical BS for today. Good night.

I feel like I need to go with my gut more, and just see what happens, rather than trying to work really hard and make that perfect shot happen - it's better to let it happen to you.
Agreed ... and when CDi and Sari came up with this Idea it was to get people out shooting. When you shoot you get shots. If you dont shoot you get no shots. When you shoot you get to learn about what makes a nice shot both in composition and technical terms. Maybe one day you find yourself just shooting 'in the zone' and that is nice. No point being too attached to results because then you lose it.
Hopefully you can help me with a problem, Diane likes Tesco brand baked beans, where as i like Heinz. I also like apples and Diane like pears but we won't start comparing them
So if you were hungry but didn't have much money, maybe you would happily eat the Tesco beans and realise they can be just as sustaining as the more expensive variety, even if they are a tad different. Of course, if lots of people on 'Beans on the Net' kept telling you day in and day out that you had to eat only 'Heinz' then maybe you would starve.
Of course, beans also need to be cooked. Now you can warm them up in the microwave in a minute (USM/IS/point and shoot style) or you can add them to a pan, watch them, warm slowly, stir, and really be engaged in the cooking process (manual/MF style).
Good quality and creativity can be had cheap, same as a good meal. Is it such a bad thing to remind people of that? All the famous guys you quote so often used similar gear in the old days. Of course they were not so cheap back then. I think it's helpful that people are reminded that they have 'better' options to the kit lens and 50mm 1.8 and that those options really can help them learn to 'cook'.

From out of nowhere came a few extra moments this morning which I'll use to comment on the rest of the pictures from this week:
BeccaNH - Definetly like the CP picture better looks like many of the scenes we saw last week on the Sky Line Drive.
Claire - Good job on the PP both versions are good in their own right, but; I favor the B&W version.
cdi-ink.com - Took some thinking before I "got" your first post, nice picture by the way. Your John Deere tractors are a good illustration for looking at the subject matter from different angles. (I have those tractors in my collection also)
wu-wie0 - Oh Man!!! What a bummer!:( And it doesn't sound like it got any better.
tommykjensen - I like the semi-silohoutte lighing on the swans but the Kestrels win out as my fav of the two. They are just too cute, can I say that about a bird of prey? Also, I thought I knew, now I'm not sure, what does the sign mean? As I look at it, I think it could have several meanings.
joayne - Nice take on the theme. Your pictures make me want to meet your friend, just from these shots she appears to be a neat lady.
kwsanders - Congrates on the new house. In this case I like the color version better though I can't explain why, just personal prefrence I guess.
In2photos - You certainly hit the nail on the head with this illustration of isolating the subject using DOF. (I use the same brand of sunscreen, just higher SPF, I'm an original "Ivory Girl";) )
ibdb - Another good example to illustrate DOF and what it can do. I like the softer, dreamer look in picture #1.
Crashless - I really like both angles and DOF differences. Another thing to consider when shooting from the gut, you may not loose the shot if over think the subject. Curtis N and I have found some of our best captures in theater shoots is when we just point, focus, and shoot. We seem to catch some unique expressions that way that we may have missed otherwise.
Baked Beans - Don't care for them myself, but give me fresh green beans, cooked all day with a ham hock, anytime.:D

The sign means danger and keep out. The illustration is supposed to be an explosion (of old grenates. the area is an old military training area).

Thanks everyone. I am glad you liked the illustration of DOF and isolating a certain subject.
BeckyN- I have to apply that several times throughout the day if we spend more than a few hours outside. I am pretty fair skinned myself and can burn pretty easily, looking liked a cooked lobster in no time.
Crashless- I too like the first pic a little better and think it would be really nice if more of the flag were visible.

baked beans, y'all I don't even know what y'all are talking about we have Heinz ketchup but i've never seen heinz beans and the other brand? Most not be in the states, atleast where I live... as to the cheap vs. expensive.. I suppose it's good that Dave's post was made in good fun. obviously he appreciates his hoya's and his manual focus lenses, he gets wonderful shots from them. But, considering that he owned an L to shoot with as well should give some indication that he's not trying to start a revolution..... but, merely remind folks that you can and will can be creative, and get wonderful shots without spending a ton. Not that the ton of money gear isn't worthwhile, just that it isn't crucial... there? did I get it wrong Dave??....

Mikey Boy ... there is a germ of an idea there ;) We all have weather. For some it is cold and icy, for others it is sunny and sweaty, while others are still deciding . So, certain weather means certain things. It could be playing frizby on the beach, or walking through rain in an umbrella, hosting a BBQ, or falling on your ass in the snow.
Just an idea ... but we want as many as possible people ;) Come on Nouna man, what was that idea you had the other day?

Everyone should chime in with ideas as usual. It's more fun that way. :)
Think Dave & I once discussed "Details'' as a theme. You know, looking for detail stuff instead of showing the big picture.
Still life is also an idea. Street photography. Or choosing a special object/scene & see how that is interpreted by different people.

Condyk's suggestion works for me, we can't use the weather as an excuse not to be shooting if the idea flys.;)
Another idea might be seasonal activity for your area. Seeing as this week marks the beginning of summer in the northern hemisphere and winter in the southern hemisphere.

I don't much like the idea of cropping.. but something like tight compositions like what Claire originally suggested and if anybody wants to take a shot that leaves us guessing as to what it might be.. why not?..
