Just got my 10D yesterday and I shot my 4 year old grandson's soccer game this AM with the 28-135 IS lens. Junior league soccer fields are quite small - about 50x100 and I found the 28-135 was great for close and medium range but fell a bit short when I was at one end and the action was at the other end of the field.
What's the best way to handle this?
1 - use a different lens like a 28-200?
2 - switch lens amidst all the action? (naa)
3 - be quicker on my feet and run the field with the kids?
How do you handle small venue sporting events?

To me it looks like you have answered your own question by ordering the 70-200 lens. That one will do the job fine, and I doubt you will miss the 28-70 range when shooting sport anyway, so no lens changes needed!

I use a 100-400L when shooting jr sports and I move with the kids. Of course, with soccer, moving with the kids would take on a whole new level of speed and lung capacity!
I've watched Corky Trewin - photographer for the Seahawks (who seemingly would have whatever lens arsenal he wishes). Every Seahawk game I attend, the story is the same. This guy sprints all over the place, from sidelines to endzones and back. He's continuously on the move. There was once a contest here to be his assistant for a day. I'd have loved to have won it just to watch him up close although the job was basically to sprint around the field with him carrying his bag of lenses.
Or course, that's not jr sports and he does have the luxury of having multiple cameras with various lens choices strapped around his neck so it's not like he changes his lens on the fly like we'd have to. So, at least one professional uses a combination of options 1, 2, and 3. :-)
Take care,
David
