I have the Canon 18-55 USM and it really does perform relatively well even though it's clearly not L quality. It's a Micro USM so it's not the better ring USM and the build is pretty flimsy but I was just wondering if anyone else has the USM version, as opposed to the standard kit version, and how they feel about it.

i had it and used it as a paper weight for about 3 months. it did fairly well as long as the stack wasn't too big.... :)

i am just messing around, it is actually a decent lens for the price and when stopped down a bit, it can take some impressive shots...

I used mine for quite a while before I got the 12-24 and the 17-85, now it sits in a drawer. Did a good job of getting me started though!

Optically the USM version is supposed to be the same as the non-USM version. i certainly wouldn't pay any extra $ for it, and I never considered my non-USM 18-55 EF-S lens to be noisy or particularly slow with focussing. stopped down a bit, it's perfectly acceptable, and it still has a place in my camera bag...just not on the camera.
I won't sell it because when the time comes to go FF or perhaps even a 1-series - the 20D will go, and i feel it's better to sell a camera with a lens.
