I have the Dynatron AT-858 tripod. I really enjoy using it, but the one gripe that I have about it is that the center column prevents me from getting my setup any closer than 24 inches from the ground.

Does anyone know if there is an accessory that I can purchase to use with the tripod that would allow me to make use of that center column as a horizontal lateral arm?

On my 94 you reverse the column and sling the camera underneath to get lower. Works well. Dunno if this helps. I won't if you really want a horizontal, but will if you want lower.

I have actually done the column reversal thing. It works well for some macros. I am really looking to be able to get the camera itself just a few inches off the ground in a top-side-up fashion. Does that make sense? I am really looking for more angular shots, but from a lower point of view.

I have definitely done that. Unfortunately, my shakiness generally prohibits me from hand holding the 100 mm macro even when laying on the ground. :(
