i'm an absolute begginner on a budget.
i'm going overseas and need something that will basically just do the job.
is there any point looking for something at this price range?
i'm looking at the velbon 347GB or 343E but i've been told to not go with this and go for something with a detachable head.

I have the Velbon Ultra LUXi SF for travelling:

I changed out the provided ballhead with a Bogen model with quick release. This setup works great for me. Very quick to set up and take down. I have the 17-85IS, 100mm 2.8 macro, and Sigma 70-300 lenses. The Velbon Ultra Maxi series is a little taller.
I should note that I use this tripod for lightweight carry-around - it fits perfectly at the bottom inside of my Lowepro Mini Trekker pack. I do have a heavier tripod for more general use.

Check out Amvona's offerings on Ebay. I just got a fantastic Dynatran tripod with a ball head for less than $100.

I very much like my Slik 300DX for travel.

It is very sturdy, very well made, and doesn't flex or slip during use. For travel I like to take off the 3-way head and use a ball head which is more compact, but you could just remove the handles for packing.

The Dynatran range via Amvona can be recommended. Get a CF model. I got the 994 kit which comes with a good magnesium ballhead for below $150.

Mate if you want something cheap I wouldn't buy anything from the site for whom you have included the link. I had a quick perusal and their prices seem to be very high and inflated. Go to a local store and offer cash and get a discount or do a better search of the net.
