With the 550, how do I get it to trasmit ETTL without adding flash to the exposure?
I believe you can do this with the 580, but I'm not sure.
Thanks!

Your question presupposes that the flash is already in Master mode. That being the case, there is a way to turn off the flash of the master so that it doesn't contribute to the overall flash lighting but can still control the slaves. See page 57 of your 550EX manual.

That's wonderful Leo, but I don't have a manual, thus the reason for my question. If you can point me to a download of the manual or be kind enough to share the details, I would appreciate it.

Sorry, didn't realize you didn't have a manual, otherwise, I would have spelled it out for you earlier.
Anyway, here it is:
1. Press the <SEL/SET> button several time until the light rays of the flash icon and the word "On" or "Off" flashes. (If "Off" is flashing, the flash is already off.)
2. Press the <-> button to turn off the flash. The word "Off" will flash. (To turn on the flash, press the <+> button. The word "On" will flash.)
3. Press the <SEL/SET> button again. If the master flash is set to OFF, the icon of the lighting bolt with the arrowhead to the left of the flash icon will blink.
