For my 50MM F/1.4, what are the best aperture settings for portraits? When I go down to F/1.8-2.4 range, it blurrs the some parts of the subject as well as the background. I would like to see a sharp subject and blurred background. Thanks.

If you focus on the eyes shoot at any f stop. Keep away from the background, 6-10 feet if possiable. The further your subject is away from the background the more f stop you can use, IE F8. Also how much light hitting the background factors in. Hope that helps some.

I agree with with fotog and you could open your lens up to f/5.6 that should help your DOF to blur the background.

just avoid a tight shot. even you are shooting with a very small aperture there is the tendency to blur your subject. we call it selective focussing. so next time try to calculate your distance and the use of your aperture wisely to get a bettet DOF.
thanx man,
