I ran across this gizmo this morning and "thought" is was a great idea for temporary storage. I realize that one could just get more compact flash cards put this would help for longer photo shoots and the ability to take more shots in "RAW" mode.

Has anyone used this and how does it perform?

Thanks

Bradly-

I bought an Image Tank 2G with a 20gb drive and used it on vacation two months ago and it performed flawlessly. I shot about 600 photos in raw and had plenty of storage space remaining.

It doesn't have the photo preview that some other units have, but it's only about half the price.

Herb,

This may be crazy, but, can you connect the 10D directly to and record your shots directly to the Image Tank?

That would save a little time if I could.

Thanks

I purchased and for a 2 week trip to Alaska. It worked great, filled up 15G out of 20G and never even recharged the battery till I got home and dumped them to my computer. I bought two 512M cards and I could go all day, but most of my shots were jpg.

Bradley-

I don't think it can be done. The unit is designed to receive a CF unit (or other media with applicable adapter) and download the data from the CF to the hard drive (HD), or vice versa.

Information can be found on their web site. If you post a message on their site and nobody responds, their technicians may post an answer for you. I've seen them do that before. Seems like they think enough of their products to take the time to see what their customers want.

Thanks Herb,

It's just an idea but would be pretty cool to be able to do so. I'll check their site for more info.

I have a G2 and loved it until I used it's USB 2.0 port. It's 2.0 compatible, but it transfers at 1.2 speed. That means it will take hours to transfer a full disk. Other than that, it's a nice unit.

I used a 40 gig G2 during a week long shoot last week. I shoot with a 10D in raw and I put about 20 gigs of files into the G2. I'd dump it each night to my laptop and a 120 gig external firewire hard drive that I also took with me. That gave me 3 drives that my images were on. I also bought the AA battery adapter in case I used up the internal battery but I never had to use it.

My routine was to fill a 1 gig card, swap cards in the 10D, put the full card into the CF slot of the G2, turn it on, hit EXE, make sure the download started and put the G2 in my camera bag to dump while I continued shooting. I'd check on it from time to time and when it got close to 100% transferred I'd watch it. The first time I missed when it was done worried me because it shuts itself off after about 2 minutes of no activity. So I didn't know for sure if the dump completed successfully. In those cases I just did another dump. When I had a chance I did a dump and then watched it till it shut itself off and I saw what it was doing.

Great little device. Hopefully it will continue to work as well over time.
