Can someone please explain the significance of LPbatch and Non-linear when it comes to taking pictures? Does one have to run these actions on RAW/Jpeg?

I was looking at the following page on fredmiranda.com

Your comments/thoughts would be appreciated.

Thx

You use the patch on RAW files only. Use the Linear patch once you have set your preferecnces in your converter (such as the CANON FVU) to Linear. Use the Nonlinear patch on files that you have already converted from RAW to TIF.

It is an increase in dynamic range -- more data for the levels of the image (shadows, three-quarter tones, midtones, highlights, etc.). If you have more data used to reference an image, then you increase the potential for more detail, you can recover more depth, and even get sharper looking images with more accurate color rendering.

Unfortunately, if you use a Mac with OS 9.2, you cannot use FVU with the patch (there is a bug). It does work well with dcraw, but dcraw does not work on OS 9.2 (it is OS X only). So, if you are Mac OS X then you should download dcraw (it is free) and use the patch with this.

For PC, I was told that it works very well on a PC with BreezeBrowser.

Hope this helps.

So let me understand...if I have a JPEG I can use non-Linear Patch and if a RAW I should use the LPBatch? I am a little confused about the BreezeBrowser reference. I thought the fredmiranda actions were only "actionable" via PS??

There is a bug in FVU that produces faulty linear TIFF files for the 10D. When processed with 10D LPBatch, images get posterised.

BreezeBrowser is an alternative converter. This does not suffer the same problem as FVU and linear TIFFs will process fine with Fred's action.

Regards,

I guess I am still confused about 1 think. Why would one want to use these actions.

Last night I took a picture that looked OK but was slightly dark, converted it to TIFF with the Linear setting. The outout was an even darker image. So when I then ran the LPBatch it kinda took it back to where it originally was in terms of color/lightness etc.

Am I doing something wrong here?

Thanks for the link.

I wonder if CaptureOne (C1) offers any of this linear/Batch functionality.

I downloaded a demo version but do not see where I can change the options?

It doesn't.
