Slang term for someone that falls or is pushed into a toilet...

I wonder why some cultures would think that this is the proper way to use the toilet?

Lack of familiarity for one.

Some areas have bowls that are sunk into the floor. Move from that model to the model in the drawing and "sit" may not come to mind.

Or, some people just don't like sitting.

They need that in all public restrooms! Hahahahaha! That's a good one! I'm actually kina serious, I've seen pee on the seats too many times... Yuck!

Looks like Arabic, where did you capture?

In some primitive cultures they just squat on the ground, so I can see why this might be needed.

Well, think about it, before the flush toilet, before the 'out house'.....how would a human take a dump?

Add to that what BillsBayou said (I've heard the same...a hole in the ground and a water hose..) and there you go. Instructions on how to take a krap.

You are correct, the higher you are and lower your legs, the harder to properly empty the bowels, I've even heard it recomended to keep a foot stool near the toilet...

It's in arabic, got no clue what it says. The funny thing was that the illustrations were on two toilets in Sweden. Not only that, but I was at this place where they had dance and such, and it's not a club, more like a park for people. These illustrations were on their toilets. I just laughed and had to take a quick pic.

Not all toilet same. In China, something much different from western toilet shown on sign. Others already describe it. Public one is nightmare.

In prepare for to host 2008 Olympics Chinese government start program to install 8 million western toilet.

Western toilet becoming very popular in China now.

Believe it or not I've seen footprints on some toilet seats here in Canada. Maybe we should start posting those signs.

it is still common to find "squat" toilets in France and Italy. A simple hole in the floor with two indentations on the left and right when you place your feet.

That is fine, but aren't they level with the floor at least? No problems if that's the case, but I don't get why anyone would jump up on a toilet seat that's quite above ground! Not very steady and safe, is it?

Thanks for sharing Claire.

Don't want to get too personal here but you could be on the toilet for four to five minutes at a time. Whoever does do that must have pretty good balance.

I like the T shirt idea too!

In college during my summer job, the guys in my department joked about 'Perch'...you would see no feet under the stall even though you knew it was occupied.

Then during a business trip to Japan, travelling on the Bullet train between Kyoto and Tokyo, I went to the restroom to discover the big hole in the floor instead of a western toilet. Even though I have time in the military and experienced slit trenches, I still opted to go find the western style toilet!

The arabic writing explains it all to me. OVer here they "squat" over the toilet and do not sit on the seat. They also do not use toilet paper (at least in Iraq they don't - place like Dubai and Bahrain are more Western and the culture is completely different.)

Anyway, here in the Green ZOne we have to put those signs up in our rest rooms so the locals that work for us don't stand on the seat. When they do they always break the toilet seat or even worse, their aim is bad and miss the bowl with their "goodies".

Sorry to be so graphic, but that is just the way it is over here. Just wanted to explain why they make signs like that. :D

Kilroy,
I knew there are countries who squat, but why stand ON the seat? I mean, as a female I too squat when going to a public restroom, but I would never stand on the seat. Logic says that as a Western toilets are higher above ground they're not to be stood on as the weight may break it, or more likely you'll lose balance & hurt yourself!

Many years back, there were some public places here in the interior of the country that had the "Turkish toillets" (at least that's how they were know here). Thankfully they seem to be gone now.
On the opposite side, there seems to be a tendency here in modern apartment buildings, to eliminate the "bidet".

(I just know someone will ask...:) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bidet)

Thanks pretty funny :)

I remember a few years back when I was in Macedonia, the toliets consisted of a triangle cut into the floor with 2 indentations for your feet to rest( I think that was what they were for:)). I could have used instructions while I was there
