View Full Version : What can I expect from a 1D?

Hello all,
I am currently preparing to upgrade from my current D60. I had planned on going the route of the D10, however after reading all of the arguments about that models autofocus I think I'm leaning more towards the 1D. My primary concern is what kind of resolution can I expect to get out of this models lower resolution? I regularly do prints on my Epson 1280 at a size of 13 x 19. Does anyone have any experience printing with the 1D at this resolution?

I too look forward to any feedback on this topic. I know that Art Morris, the bird photographer, uses his 1D over his 1Ds when he feels the faster frame rate is necessary for the shot. He has stated that the images from the 1D are not as generally usable for commercial purposes as the 1Ds. I will email him and ask his opinion on the matter.

I see that KEH Brokers is advertising the Canon 1D for $2999 right now. I hope that's an indication of the impending release of a replacement. Hopefully the 1Dx or whatever it's to be called is coming soon and at a lower price than the 1D. to read Arthur Morris' opinions on the 1D. He also writes about it in earlier bulletins and about the 10D later on in his bulletins.

He has some good opinions about the 1D.

I have been using the !D for over a year. It is a much better camera than the D30;D60;10D, It has faster response, more frames per second. The resolution is not as good as the D60 10D but the pixels are larger so the "feel" of the picture is different. I have no trouble doing 8x10 and 13x19 on an Epson 1270/2200 are generally good. You might want to wait a month to see if there is a replacement for the 1D. I am thinking about a 1Ds but the performance specs are not as good as the 1D but the resolution is 3x higher.

In my case you can expect a camera that is broken out of the box. It'll focus leaps and bounds better than your D60 though.

Buy 1D and never think about anything else. It is capable of providing crisp 13x19 prints from Epson 2200 (from my personal experience). Actually you can print even larger. The lightjet printers have excellent hardware interpolation engine, which will give you razor sharp enlargements from quality photolabs like Calypso (at San Jose, CA).

It has been 2 years since 1D was introduced. So it is about time for Canon to replace it. I would wait a year to get its replacement instead of buying an old camera.

Remember the useful life of a camera is from the date of purchase and the time it is replaced by a better descendent. It is better to buy one when it is just introduced than waiting for its price to drop.

Okay, now there are two etailers selling the 1D below $3K.

Price at the above site is $2979. I think this means that something is in the pipeline to replace it. We'll see. October is a normal introduction time for Canon pro bodies.

Those prices are very tempting, but I believe a replacement is just around the corner...Canon doesn't wait for things to happen. They make them happen.

Watch.

I have had a 1D for a little over a year. If you shoot in raw you should get about a 12 meg file. if you convert these to a tiff or a jepg the result should be very good. I have not printed anything larger that a an 11 by 14 but the results were excellent. As I understand it the pixels size is larger that the 10D.

There are some other considerations. The shots with available light will be cleaner because the camerea is just better with the 45 point autofocus. It is much much cleaner and faster that the 10D. The last consideration is the shutter lag is a lot less than with the 10D. I own both cameras. I like them both and they each have there own place and use.

We have both a 10D and a 1D. We have made 20x30 fuji crystal archive prints with both cameras and our clients are pleased - thrilled with the results. The 1D gits a litte "gritty" at that size, but our subjet for poster prints is "sports" and it just adds to the "tough image".
Yes 1600 ISO to 20x30 - can look nice...

No worries about 13x19 on an Epson 2200...
Sample posters at http://www.everafterimages.com/english.htm

enjoy...

I'm afraid I don't have any experience with a D30/D60. I do have a 1D (and have been working with 1D's for some time now). Bought it a couple of months ago for private use, looked at the 10D, but wasn't too excited about build quality, sharpness out of camera and the AF-system.

The 1D is - IMHO - a very good camera; rugged, fast and reliable. For the work I do, it is one of the best choices around. If you can get a body for a decent price, I wouldn't hesitate.

Good luck,
Paul

I bought my 1D when they were selling for $5000+ and I never regret doing so. I eagerly purchased a 10D and was one of the unlucky buyers who had nothing but problems. Back to the 1D for me. Built like a tank and worked "right out of the box" focus dead on and seems to retain better highligh detail than D30, D60 or 10D.
Regularly print 13x19 and have had some enlargements to 24x30 using all the photoshop tricks. I will keep it even when the replacement is available.
