I have had my D60 for almost a year now and I started experiencing repeated errors stating that the lens is not attached correctly. Even when I don't get the error, often the autofocus does not work. It is becoming a real pain.
I have this problem with all my lenses (Tamron 28-300, Sigma 28-80, Sigma 70-300, Sigma 170-500).
I have wiped off the contacts on both the lenses and the camera but it has not helped. Any suggestions? I am missing many good action shots due to this problem.

Dave, I am sure that somebody will point out the common theme here (non-Canon lenses). You are correct that the camera-lens contacts must be clean, but then, if they have been cleaned repeatedly, they could be worn or loose (even though that is not likely). If the camera does not see good communication from the lens, then you can get errors.
I would suggest that you borrow or rent a good Canon lens for a while, and if the problems go away, then that tells you something.

Bob,
I have read about the non-Canon lenses possibly being a problem, however I would be interested to hear if others are having/have had these problems. I see a lot of positive discussion concerning Tamron and Sigma lenses, but you were the only one to reply to my original post.
I don't change my lenses all that much so it's hard for me to believe the contacts are worn.
My camera is almost at its one year point (warranty expiring) and if it's the camera I need to get it to Canon.

My D60 is about one year old also, and it does not have any communication problems with lenses. But then, I have only one non-Canon lens. [But it is in the repair shop. Hmmm.]
I would suggest that you borrow or rent a good Canon lens for a while, and if the problems go away, then that tells you something.

Hi!
I have an EOS 10D and have had the problem aforementioned. The problem for me stems from the lenses I had (keyword: had) I had (still have one of them, the Sigma 28-80 F3.5-5.6 and sold the Sigma 70-300 lens). The aforementioned lenses were for a Canon EOS 50E dating back to before 12/99 (I can hear that this is so last millenium). The 10D has had numerous upgrades to many parts of it. I had gotten weary of seeing "Err 99" a lot, so I sold it and got me another Sigma lens, the brand new 120-300mm F2.8 EX/HSM/ETC. I have had not a single problem with it and man can I take some pics w/ it. I have 3 topics I have started and know there are more, but they are something to the effect of "10D and non-Canon lenses" describing the "Err 99" bit, "CDS, Posting of Moon Pic" and "First pics w/ Sigma 120-300 F2.8 EX/HSM..." the last 2 are self explainatory. Sigma will do a rechip so I can use it w/ my 10D camera, but being here in England, it takes so long for stuff to get here and it was just easier to sell it and get a new one. That's exactly what I did. I will be replacing the 28-80 w/ 16-35 and another L glass lens eventually. I can't begin to tell you the difference between the 70-300 and 120-300 lenses.
Just put it this way, the 120-300 kicks the living crap out of the 70-300. Therein lies another interesting bit. The 70-300 was like $150 and the 120-300 was like $1900. Need I say more, nevemind the F2.8 lens weighs 5 3/4 lbs! I wish you luck...
Cheers from England,
Canuck

Dave,
I think you need to send your Camera in,. A body that has worked for a year with three different lenses with no errors, and then all of a sudden the same three lenses and error messages?
By all means try another lens or two,. but get that body to canon.

I sent the body to Canon at the beginning of November to have the problem checked out. On return, the paperwork said they replaced the auto-focus unit. It seems to be working like new agian, though I haven't used it much yet.
The process to return the camera and get it back took less than two weeks. Canon does a great job of this. It was all covered under warranty.

:D Glad to hear that you have a working camera again! :D
And indeed thanks for keeping us up to date. It is allways good to know what the real issue was in a case like this.
Happy Shooting :)
