Hi Everyone,
I'm going to Pensylvania for a conference next week and am going to have a quick holiday in New York and Boston afterwards. I've not sorted out any accommodation yet and was just wondering if anyone could suggest reasonably priced hotels/B&Bs in those cities?
Cheers,
Paul.

Hi Paul;
I'm not sure on what you mean by reasonably priced without knowing your price range. Since I'm here at NYC (and never been to Boston, I'll only discuss about NYC ;)
Anyways, to give you an idea, the closer you are at the the Time Square, the more expensive (and a lot better - for me personally). Same thing at the Central Park (museum mile), it's also expensive. Since you are already in NYC just for the weekend, you don't want to go to Bronx, Brooklyn or Harlem eventhough a lot cheaper (but with subway, everything is just close).
I heard that Marriott at Time Square is nice. But if you really like to spend a little bit, there's Affinia 50 (near Grand Central). There's also the Hilton. If you really like luxurious, Mandarin Oriental;)
Well, choices are never ending. If you like to stay very late and like it very crowded, get a hotel close at Time Square (42nd st / midtown) - empire state building, grand central, rockefeller, broadway shows. If you like to stay near the water, go uptown (42nd and up) - Liberty or ellis island, world trade platform, wall street (business district). If you like downtown (42nd and down), you have the museums, little italy (my favorite), china town.
Hope it helps - ok I think you only asked the accomodation, sorry haha.

Thanks very much for the info Sophia, I've looked at the hotels and they look amazing :D
However, I maybe should've explained my situation a bit better, I'm a mere physics postgrad living life on a shoe-string so maybe rather than saying "reasonable", I probably should've said "cheap" :cry:
Sorry to give you this vital info after you've written your lovely long reply.
All the best,
Paul.

Hey MisterGib, you might want to take a look at this (http://www.nymetro.com/listings/hotel/enhp/). The place is clean, inexpensive, located at Upper West Side, and near subway lines. Highly recommended for travelers on a budget.
How do you plan to get to NYC from PA, and from NYC to Boston? If you're thinking of taking a bus, try the Chinese buses that run from Chinatown. It is an open secret of sorts among travelers, they have inexpensive rates and the buses are clean and comfortable. How cheap is the fare? Round trip for NYC to Boston to NYC is around $35 I think. Check them out here (http://www.staticleap.com/chinatownbus/). Have a happy and safe trip!
