After a little looking on release dates, I found out some very interesting facts....
The Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II was annouced September 21, 2004
The Canon EOS-1Ds was annouced September 24, 2002
Which were both tuesdays. If this continues to be true could we see the annoucement of the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III on September 19, 2006.
It would not only keep the pattern, but make so many so happy.
"The rumor I heard is that the 1D and 1Ds will converge into a single top of the line full frame 22 mp model. It will have an improved 45 sensor AF system and be capable of a respectable fps at full frame. Higher speeds will be obtained by 1.3 and 1.6 crop options that will produce 12 and 8 mp images respectively. The 8 mp mode will be at a higher speed than any existing DSLR. Price will be higher than the current 1DMkIIN and lower than the 1DsMkII, probably somewhere around $5,000 USD."

or
According to a SI Photog using it at the US Open. He just spilled the beans, but did not know any official name of the camera. It looks just like the old 1DsMKII. He said it was 22MP and held 28 Raw images in buffer at 4fps.
He was told the camera would be released this year at a MSRP of a little over 10K...
It also had what looked like a 3" LCD it was big. Figures i just picked up a 1dsMKII at Dell too.

That makes me happy.... not so much if it was 10,000

I think you guess on the announcement date is good as it is a week before Photokina 2006 so would be appropriate.
I think the price on your first option is highly unlikely at this point, it may eventually drop down to $5000 range, but when it comes out I suspect it will be at least $7000
Based on simple fact 1DsMkII is still running $6,900 even a relatively sharp drop it will probably not make $5000 by September/November time frame and I find it unlikely that Canon would price a better camera less then the lesser camera is going for at the same time at least not by more then maybe $100. And 22MP and better AF would likely make it better then the 1DsMkII.
As to the second one, I can also believe in that possibility, however, I suspect the possibility it may have crop mode when it comes out for higher-speed and the pre-prodcution camera the SI guy had did not have this ability yet. Or maybe they had him testing the sensor and it still used a processor that was speed limited.
I suspect Canon would want to have some surprises when it comes out.
I personally am still hoping for the 8FPS at 22MP camera with the larger buffer. I expect at least a LCD screen of the 1DM2N size. But should it actually be available at $5000 I will be weaping tears of joy at not having to pay the extra money I expect to if it meets my requirements.

Altered image.
The "Mark III" lettering doesn't look centered, but "DIGITAL" is R/L centered. "DIGITAL" is exactly centered under "Mark II" characters, but not under "Mark III."
(I haven't compared the "new model" camera with the existing Mk II model for other clues.)
(And now I see the other thread: "joke".)

I am sure we will see this camera come out this September, B&H said the updated 1ds will be out in a few months..and if it is going to have a better price tag on it, I might have to pick it up.

i think your guess with the announcement date could be right on. makes sense to me anyway!
if the camera was released between 7,000 and 9,000 bucks i would definitely pick one up.
and yeah, thats an altered image. no question about it.

Can't see how a 22mp mkIII could cost less than a 16mp mkII, but geez, dreaming is what that rumors forum is for actually, right? :)

An unnamed Canon rep said there will be no new sensor technology released from Canon this year, but an announcement for a poss. Jan. release will come before Photokina.

This thing about 1.3 and 1.6 crop options is interested, because presumably you would be able to still see the 1.0x crop view in the viewfinder?

as long as the new camera has Better AF and better out of camera images i will buy one im fed up with all this post processing we have to do .
I would have thought by now Canon could come up with a camera that shows a nice contrasy saturated sharp photo from the word go with little or no processing ,dont get me wrong here i love my 1dmk2 and the way it works but im not kidding myself that it give's me what i want from a camera .

It looks like the Mark II N, not the Mark III, coming to a camera store near you...maybe. Anyone read Japanese?

Haven't they done this to a point with the 5D, IIN and 30D?
I said I would never buy a 1Ds as the 5D FF meets all my requirements, now with the talk of 1,3, 1,6 and FF all in one camera body sounds very attractive, is it time to start saving again.

Hmmm, that's odd - usually Canon is very tight-lipped about their new products, but now I have seen this from a dealer and an Israeli Web site talking about new Canon products. Sometimes there is an "authorized" leak from some Canon office around the globe just before the announcement is made.
I wonder how long this will stay up on CameraWest's site? And if it stays there, does that count as the authorized leak?
Maybe the Ni*on "teaser" on their Web site has forced Canon to respond in a similar fashion. . .
Have Fun,

That could be but I find it a little funny because the Ni*kon camera will me more of a main stream camera over the new MKIII which only the pros will buy and will care about so leaking a pro body isn't that big of a deal compared to a new 30D or 350D...

Maybe the camerawest offer is strategic misinformation to get people to pause their purchase decisions?

That could be, but they risk the ire of Canon if it is not authorized. I remember some online vendors that jumped the gun on one of the past rebates and posted rebate coupons before the rebate started, and Canon made them take them off of their site.

I was talking to my local Calumet dealer a few days ago and he was saying thy expect the new MkIII to be released at a cheaper price that the MkII was released at. He was saying that Canon want more people to upgrade to the new model than thy normaly get,so the features will be well increased. Noticeably the option to setup the MkIII to match the MkIIN on frame rate. Will be interesting to see what all comes true out of what thy have been told. He recons it being releades earlier than thy wanted too because of what Nikon have released lately.

I can't see a mk3 having 22mp and being cheaper. It SHOULD be, but as this is Canon we're talking about, highly unlikely.
