Does anyone know the important differences between these two cameras, besides the price?

There's a lot of great info on this in the EOS forum. I was wondering the same myself. I think for me, the 10D would be the choice.

In part, what's important is a function of how you use the camera and what you shoot.
For me, the lacking ingredients are:
1. Only one focus mode (AI Focus, which switches between one-shot and AI Servo modes, but you can't pick the two independently)
2. No pc cord plug (for attaching studio lights)
3. No flash exposure compensation
4. No custom functions, which I (and many others) have found to be very handy.
Those factors may not be important to you, but they might be. Hopefully that is helpful.
P.S. I think you mentioned in another thread that you were also considering the Nikon; you might also look into the new Pentax DSLR. It's getting some good initial reviews and the street price should make it attractive.

I have a 10D, and played around with the 300D at a store recently. It just doesn't look, feel or sound as solid. Its lighter and the shutter has this funny sound. You'll know what I mean if you try both. My right thumb also missed the wheel which I find to be more convenient then the buttons. But that's the "look and feel" factors, which are cosmetic (though not unimportant to many). The limits on AI Focus, and exposure comp would bother me. The sticker shock wears off, but the quality lingers. :)

NG,
In this post;

I tried to give an answer based on gut instinct,.. and the heart and soul of the differences as opposed to a bunch more specs.
It may have been a stupid waste of time,. or it may be what someone faced with this decision is looking for. ???

I have a dRebel, but for money factors only. I was able to buy the Rebel (barely!) selling my old EOS 5, a film scanner and a color enlarger. So, to me, it was the Rebel or nothing. Also the 18-55 was very intresting for me, because it covers the 28-45 (in 35mm equivalence) lost by the 1.6x crop in my 28-135 lens. A similar solution (the 17-40L) and the 10D cost more than twice the cost of the Rebel kit, and I can't afford it.
So, I'm happy with the Rebel? You bet!. The build quality is slightly less robust than the EOS 5, and is lighter and smaller, but still big and heavy enough to balance well with the 28-135 and to some extent with the 75-300 IS. Yes, I miss some features, mostly in the flash department (second courtain sync, flash exp.comp), but mostly that's all. AF is excellent (similar to the 5 but the flash as AF assist is more disturbing, and you must choose to use it), the AE mode limitation is a nonissue to me (I use histogram to check exposures) and the AF mode selection is a little annoying somethimes, but they are some workarounds for the situation. And the image quality is almost identical to the 10D (and AFAIK, no focus problems reported yet, in fact one 10D AND 300D owner has reported his 300D hasn't the backfocus problem of his 10d)
In the lens department, the 18-55 is very good for a $100 lens, and my almost unused 75-300 suddently has becomed a very good companion to the kit lens.
Probably now the 28-135 will rest more, except in the "only one lens" configuration if I don't need wideangle.
Just my 2 cents
