Occasionally take photos in small batch, preview them fine on camera lcd, switch off and find later that one of the batch will not display. Camera shows either corrupted data or memory card error.
Import to PC and when using thumbnails, as the shot in question 'enters the screen' the picture appears momentarily and then, for example, in adobe photo album, shows the dreaded lightening bolt.
Sent email to canon who advised 'format card'
Any ideas welcomed

Sounds good. Format the card.
Might be a bad card. Is this the 16 meg that came with the camera? If not, try that card for a while. If no problem but returns when using the other card, then the problem lays in the card.

Could it be considerd good practice to re-format your CF with your camera every once in a while? Or will it have no effect unless there is a problem?

What kind of CF card do u use? I have this problem b4 and it's bad card! Try to use a card reader and format it, then try to copy some large file (eg. mp3 )to fill the whole capacity of cf card untill it FULL!, if there's error when you try to copy the file into the CF card, then the CF card is COMFIRM DAMAGED! Take it for warranty change!
I had this problem before! It's better to use a CARD READER to FORMAT the card instead of using the A70!
And your're right cA70, ocassionally format the card is better!
Good luck!
Cheers!

All a format does (unless you force a low level format) is re-write the FAT. The only good thing this does (that I can think of) is make it easier to recover accidentally deleted images/files next time the card is used. This is because the recover program won't see files deleted long ago. Therefore all files found as recoverable will be since the re format. Personally I don't re-format as a matter of routine. But, like a lot of things, it's largely a matter of personal preference. There doesn't appear to be a hard and fast rule.

Thanks for replies - when I said Canon recommended formatting card, I shud have added a shade of sarcasm! Have formatted card and another card many times and still happens occasionally. Both cards in question are 128Mb Crucial and both work fine in my 10D but not in the A70.
Will try idea of formatting in Card Reader (thanks for that) but given they both work fine in other camera, must admit suspicion heads towards the A70 itself.
What I did not mention on first post is that the corrupted one is always the first of a batch.
