I've found that if you want to use a program like adobe premere or irfan view, just rename the extention.
But if u wanna change the contents of the file, i've used adobe premere to convert before.

Just use some program to conver it! A simple solution is by using windows movie maker come together with win XP..just change the quality and format setting when you wanted to save the file....

There are so many topics about this sort of thing. It is not as simple as just converting the video file. Here's how it works:
The movie files that come off your camera are not standard avi's. They're a file format called MJPEG avi, which stands for "motion jpeg" etc. This format allows reasonable quality video to be recorded and played on small portable devices (eg. digital cameras, PDA's).
To watch these MJPEG avi's (other than using zoombrowser) and convert them, you need an MJPEG codec. Once you have installed the codec, you can decode and encode these files into other formats (eg. MPEG2), and also edit your movies in programs like premiere etc before exporting them.
I have posted a link to a free MJPEG codec download in the thread here: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=16258
Hope this helps.
Cheers
