Anybody has used a ring flash to shot portraits with the 10D. Which one do you recommend and what lens do you use with it?

... and I thought ring flashes were only used for the portraits normally done by dentists ... :)

Ringflash is not recommended for people's portrait works since it's mounted close to the optical path as the lens and create red eyes.

Hi Tonique,

I'm with Andy and Wilbert on this one. I can't understand why you are even considering the use of a ringflash for portraiture.

Well i would also like to know what ring flash to use but i have seen on "FTV" (fashion tv) that the photographers make their own contraptions to be used with their mounted flashes! The one idea was : imagine an egg shaped piece of thick board - cardboard with the wider end of the "egg" on top. their was a cutout for the lens and stretched over the "egg" was a white film of sorts thaat made up a nice mini softbox -- he was using it very close to photograph the models makeup in the change room ... i want to make one of those but am not sure of the material to use that will be white enough or "see through" enough.

There's also a how-to guide on one of the G forums describing how to build your own ring-flash for Macro photography.

It uses a print board with white LED's.

I'd like to get that effect and it looks like it's done with a ring flash:

What do you think?

I used to have a ring flash that came with an Olympus C2500L that I bought from a pawn shop. The thing was good for macros and nothing else. Funny but I put it on Ebay and sold it to a dentist for more than I paid for the camera and flash...Dean

The only way you are going to get that look is with a powerpack based ringlight. The puny liitle ring lights available for macro photos will not work. That being said you have alot of options there many made. Calumet, Norman, Barclar and many others. I've used the calumet one. It worked well. I used lenses in the 35mm to 85mm range.
