I love my movies with sound taken with my PowerShot S400. They play back fine on the camera with sound. But when I move the movie file to my desk top computer and play the movie, I can't get any sound! I get music and sound/audio from my other applications. Why not for the movies?

Thanks for any help! Tom

Are you using the same program to play music and movies? Could be the software playing it. Cause if it plays on tghe camera then it shouldn't be the video.

To tell the truth, I'm not sure what program(s) I'm using. I'm using Zoombrowser on both the camera and on the same file after transferred to my PC.

However, I have a SoundBlaster card and a high end sound card for music called Digi001 with software called ProTools. I do live recording with this card. For example, I have a program that acts as a telephone answering maching when I'm on the computer. It plays back through a speaker that is plugged into my Soundblaster Card. But my live recordings are played through the Digi001 card.

One other thing I forgot to mention is that when I play the movie back on my PC, some sound comes out of the speakers like its trying to play the audio portion of the movie... but the sound is not intellible... it just seems to be in sync with the sound material... but is not being properly interpreted.

don't know if this helps or answers your Q. Thanks for trying to help me... Tom

Try windows media player, try to play a wav file in there that u know works, then try the movie, if the sound works from the wav file then i'm out of ideas.

Just if u play somethig that works (wav) and somethign ur not sure of (avi) in the same thing (WMP), then it should give a clear idea on where the problem is.

Wav dont work + movie dont work = software
wav work + avi work, then program u used to use
neither work, then computer
wav dont work + avi work, thats just weird

ca70:

I downloaded the current version of Media Player and tried to play severl files. None played, whether sound or video or picture.

I got an error message as follows: "Error Downloading codec"

If this is a problem, what should I do to correct it?

Also, it takes about 20 seconds for Media Player to begin running something once I click on the GO button. Is that because I have an old 700 mgz pentium computer? thanks for your suggestions. Tom

Sorry about the download, i only said that because its comon on winows machienes. Even the version on 98 can run it.

Do you still have the CD that came with the camera?

I had this same problem on my gf's computer (the codec bit). The way i got it to work was to install the quicktime on the CD that came with the camera. I know that that one has the correct codec needed (other wise why would they put it on there).

I just tested it, and quicktime does play both wav files and avi files. So that should give u an answer. If quicktime doesn't play it then u could have a bigger problem, it should though.

Good news is u don't have to download this one, thats if u still have the CD.

Hi ca70

I tried again to play a video and again the sound came through the speaker... but it was not right... sort of a sound like a stuck CD... a pulsating constant sound like a wierd organ...

Yes I do have the original disc for my Canon S400. I started to load QuickTime as per your instruction and it told me that I already have a newer version of QuickTime. Shall I delete/remove it and reinstall the version on the Disc?
Thanks... Tom

I aint a software expert, but if u have a newer version, i dont think that they would take out to much stuff if any.

So ur best off keping ur updated version. Quicktime is just quick time after all.

So the noise is playing from a movie, thats a good start, using the SAME program, play a wav file. I know quicktime does it, i tested it before i posted this. The updated quicktime will for sure if my version does.

So if the wav file plays the same 'weirdness', u know the problem is in the ssoftware (quciktime or operating system, or your speakers), if the wav file plays fine, then it might be the actual avi file after all.

Let us know how u go.

Well... I wish I had good news, but I don't. I agree that it should work with the original sofware (QuickTime ver. 5). But I had downloaded 6.2. So I tried to remove it. I can't! I've deleted every file I can find relating to QuickTime. But when I install 5.0 from my disc, it tells me there is a more recent version and I have to remove it before I install 5. But I can't find any more remains of 6.2. I've tried the remove file in the control panel, 100 times!

So I guess I'll just bring in a guru... frustrating.

Thanks for trying to help me! Tom

If your feeling brave, edit your registry file. To do this, from the start button, select run and type in regedit. Save a copy first by taking the option to export the registry and then search for and remove all keys that refer to quicktime. Should do the trick.

The easy why u copuld solve this is to invent a time machine, cause what i noramly do (for trial software) is save a copy of the regestery, and i have seen a program to scan every file on the computer. Then you install it, and run the program again, it tells you every file that has been added, then you save the regestry again and use a file comparision tool. Works really well.

But since its already installed, i wouldn't know to much more about it. It should of worked for ver 6 if 5 does it. Backward compadability!

I'd recomend what 'stduc' said. If it's not in a reg, its in a file somewhere. Where i dont know.

Just had an idea, is there a second computer that you could use? I usualy use the computers at uni, so u install every program in there, then install the decent ones back at home.

I like this idea... but hesitate since I only use to do this type of thing back when DOS was used. When windows came out, I never got into editing the registry.... What do you mean by "remove all keys".. is key a technical term... like "link"???

thanks Tom

Yea, only go to the registry if you're feeling brave...
A friend took away a "harmless" key the other day, took a backup of the registry before of course.
However...the use of a backup, is not any good if you can't even get into the computer....
He had plenty of work after this...
BE CAREFUL!!

Doesn't sound healthy.

Its a simple GUI, few plays with it and u'll get used to it, the probelm is it's so simple that it is easy to delete the wrong thing.

Yea, it wasn't even a big deal...it was just a key for an older version of ZB...but that was apparently linked to vital parts of the OS...everything was grey. (Aswell as his face)

Thats why i have this really dodge computer(so slow!) as a play one, i can do all my tests on it, and if it bails, well no big deal.

Handy to have but does take up room.

I got cold feet after looking at the opening screen of the Registry: several H-keys that I had no idea what they were... so I safely exited! What a coward, eh?

Well not really, if that thing dies then ur computer can be stuffed.
