Oh boy would it ever be great to shoot a band like this in a non-arena setting. Don't forget to pack earplugs for this one :)

On July 26, KISS will play the 1,300-seat theater at the Chumash Casino Resort, the hottest new Casino in California!
Much like the Palms show back in 2003, the intimate, no-frills concert will allow KISS to flex its musical muscle! "It's a chance for us to just show people who and what we are musically," stated Gene Simmons.
Paul Stanley added, "We just couldn't pass up an opportunity where we could play such a cool intimate show. This will be a lot of fun especially right after playing the big festivals in Japan!"
Tickets for the 8 p.m. show go on sale Monday, June 26 at 3:00 p.m. Eastern. Tickets are priced from $155.00 to $235.00 and will be available by visiting the Chumash Casino Resort Box Office or by calling StarTicketsPlus at 1-800-585-3737.
The Chumash Casino Resort is located in Santa Barbara County, California, between Los Angeles and San Francisco, in the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley wine country. Visit their website at www.chumashcasino.com for directions and other info on the Resort.

Wow.
I first saw KISS in 1977, at the Nassau Coliseum on Long Island. If I remember correctly, Rush opened for them.
My coveted floor seat set me back (yikes!) a whopping $14.00...

Later that year, I spent $9.00 to see Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Those were the days...

I saw them back in '76 and again in '77 and probably didn't even pay as much as Steve did. Concerts were cheap back then. If Dwight does shoot them, I hope he brings ear plugs. Kiss is responsible in part for my permanent partial hearing loss!

Just stumbled on this thread! With my luck Kiss will be one of the bands that won't let me shoot! [I will get paid anyway, thank goodness.] Actually I may just be limited to two songs! I always have my etymotic fitted earplugs! So, is there something I should know about these guys before I shoot them? They don't dress in t-shirts and ripped jeans do they?

You should know that Gene Simmons has the longest tongue known to man, and he likes to show it to the audience. I'm not sure if they still wear the face makeup, but if they do, you should have an interesting time, to say the least. ;)

So, is there something I should know about these guys before I shoot them?
Hehehehe... Yeah, maybe...
They're one of the most successful rock bands in history. They started in 1972, and signed with Casablanca in 1973. Since then, they've sold over 63 million albums worldwide, and have been awarded 22 gold albums to date. They have certified sales of 19 million records in the United States...
They don't dress in t-shirts and ripped jeans do they?
No. No, they sure don't.
While I'm not an enormous KISS fan, they rock. You don't stick around for over 30 years if you don't. They rarely, if ever, permit photographers outside of their own organization so, if you get the opportunity to shoot them, even if for only two songs, DO IT...

But it's oh so right...
They rarely, if ever, permit photographers outside of their own organization so, if you get the opportunity to shoot them, even if for only two songs, DO IT...Just keep that ol' 1 series on burst mode, and setup your backup cameras on tripods with a rock resting on a remote shutter. :)

OK, so there's a good chance I will not be allowed to shoot!
BTW, my boss just raced into my office about this concert ... then raced back to his office and plonked down $360 for two tickets!

Yep... that would be the going price.
And, honestly, I'd be surprised if they allowed you to shoot...

Yup, being the "House Photographer" at the casino doesn't mean anything to the talent even though it must look almost magical from the outside. I get treated identically to the news media and nobody cuts them any slack. My only advantages are knowing the layout & security, good parking and knowing I can trust leaving my equipment laying around.
Say, do you think they'd let me put a camera overhead in a lighting truss? ;)

Well, Lyle Lovett and Englebert Humperdinck didn't let me shoot and they hardly are of the order of KISS. So, I will go, take my cameras and let the cards fall where they may.

Haha That made me laugh!
I saw them last year (or 2004) with Aerosmith, they rocked. The still went on all made up and the pyrotechnics were fantastic.

Dwight, even if you don't get to photograph them (which would be a pity), at least tell us what you thought about the way they looked on stage

Even I am familiar with their costumes, Rene ... but yes, I will at least give a verbal (written) report on my impressions.

This should give you somewhat of an idea of what to expect if you get the chance. Definitely not t-shirt and jeans. Definitely interesting subjects to photograph. :) I hope you get the chance.

Yea, but the same year I recall thinking that $10,000 would be a good income. That was our goal. LOL

Of that I have no doubt!!!
Personally, I think KISS would want you as their photographer.

Actually, that may well be true, but they get so insulated from me because I'm 'a photographer' that they don't ever see my images. The few who do for odds and ends of reasons usually are stunned. I have now licensed images to four bands I think the most well know is Average White Band.

Yea, I imagine that's true.
First there is the band manager, then the tour/road manager, then the venue manager. The bigger the band the more difficult it has to be. I don't work at a venue, so just trying to get "non-pro camera" photos has been a challenge at times. The band manager says cameras are o.k. with the band. Road manager says no video or pro cameras. Venue interprets that as no digital. Band won't counter what venue says. It gets really tricky. Warped Tour here had been denying all cameras until I wrote the promoter and found out that was a miscommunication.
Anyway, I think I will be able to shoot a few good bands in the future. I really am a bit petrified as I'm still learning and learning the camera in particular!
I thank you guys for the recommendation on the 50 mm 1.8 lens. I've been playing around with it and I think it's going to be a Godsend!!! :) And it wasn't even $400.
