Went to my wife's grandparent's 50th anniversary celebration today at their river lot. They put together a make-shift slip 'n slide down their hill. Needless to say the kids had a blast and it provided for some good photo ops ;) Unfortunately the background was rather distracting - a picnic area and some people sitting around.

I converted this to b&w even though I adored the color version, except for the distractions but decided on a selective color version to help remove attention from the background and retain the colorful shorts on the kid. I'll include the original (RAW conversion only, no PP) for the heck of it:

The loss of saturation and contrast when uploading jpegs to the web is rather annoying ;) I haven't noticed that happening until recently. The same jpegs on my local drive look fine. Ah well :)

great shot and decent PP on the first. You can see some of the flare on the left side of the body in #1 though. Would be interesting to see these shots coming head-on.

Thanks :) Yea, another downside to jpeg conversion :( The fading that makes selective color fairly easy is ever-so noticable when you go to jpegs. I could use some tips on the subject - selective coloring that is (and how to make it look good even after jpeg conversion).

I got some head on shots, but this shot stood out to me so it got PP'd first :)

Nice shots. I b&w/color one is nice, but I don't find the background too distracting in the original. Looks like a lot of fun!

well, what I'd do would be to duplicate the layer and desaturate it. I'd then use a mask selection or the magnetic selection tool to get as close as possible with the outline. Then I would delete the selection to bring forth the color of the young kid. The areas that might not have been pulled through I would use a paint brush to brush away the desaturated areas and bring forth the colored areas. Like I did with this dude:

It really looks fun but it look as though the slip in slide runs through the picknik area..slide through and pick up a dog from the grill.. what a concept...lol

There was a roadblock at the end of it ;) After a couple of hours they nearly reached that road block too :)

Thanks for the tips sageone. Thats basically what I did. Looking closer at it, I can really see the flair. I'll go back and fix that before (or if) I send it to the printers ;)
