My cousin is looking at buying a macro lens. I currently own (and love) the 100mm f/2.8, but he's looking into the Sigma 105mm 2.8 EX DG. B&H has the Sigma for $399 and the Canon for $469. The price is close, so i guess we're just wondering about quality. Does anyone have any imput? Thanks.

Recently, I had a chance to examine macro lenses... of the 180mm size. Check out TAmROn's SP AF180mm f/3.5 Di LD (IF) 1:1 Macro. This puppy gives Canon's "L"-glass version a serious run for its money... at about $500 less.
This is, perhaps, one of the finest pieces of "fixed-focal length" third-party glass ever made.

THis may be a little high-budget, but check it out, before you decide.

The June issue of Digital Camera (world) had the review of Macro lenses in the 100mm range.
The Canon 100mm was highly rated, but for 3rd party glass I think the Tamron 90mm SP came out on top for optics vs. price but on straight optics I think the Canon was rated the better lens in the review.

That Tamron 180mm Macro looks very nice. I think the $700 price tag would be a bit much though.

The Canon version comes in at $1100 and isn't quite as nice. With the extra $400... I think we are heading in the right direction... that's a lot of Corn Flakes.

May I only suggest you to look at Tamron 90/2.8 macro, Sigma 150/2.8 macro, Sigma 180/3.5 macro.
Canon's original L-macro costs twice as much. Canon 100/2.8 macro is ceaper but the focusing range is short for insects and small details.

I considered many different lenses before going with the Canon 100mm macro. The kicker for me was not only the USM but also the internal focusing mechanism. I didn't like the way the third party lenses extended, which might spoil an insect shot. I'm very pleased with mine and do not regret the purchase.
