Folks, if you don't mind, can you share what parameter settings you use (sharpness +?, contrast +?, etc) on the 10D, and if that's under any / all conditions or just some. Is there a best practice?

thanks!

If you shoot Raw it doesn't matter. You can adjust it when you convert and in post processing. If you shoot JPEG, it's a matter of personal preference.

The tools, filters, actions, and other aspects of the Photoshop software are more comprehensive and robust than the in-camera software that comes with the 10D. So, if you shoot RAW, your best bet is to set all of the camera parameters at the default of 0 and then do as much of the editing as you can in the 16-bit mode of Photoshop (soon with Photoshop CS you will be able to do even more comprehensive editing in 16-bit mode).

If you assign the RAW image to Adobe RGB when you open it in Photoshop, you might find the saturation level can be improved with smaller adjustments.

When you have finished with all of your image editing (curves, color adjustments, dodging, burning, cropping, resizing, rotating, etc.), the last thing you would do is apply whatever sharpening amount that is correct for the type of output -- either for electronic (viewing on screen) or for print (taking into account the line screen, ppi, viewing distance, paper stock, press or printer type, etc.).

Scott, DC, I do realize that. I was just wondering what other folks are doing if shooting Jpegs, whether the preference tends to be some in camera sharpening or none, and same for the other settings. Personally, I shoot mainly Jpegs, and set the camera to sharpen +1 and contrast +1. I have lots of routines in PS to sharpen pics, including highpass which I like very much, lab sharpen, luminosity sharpening, and edge sharpening. Just a poll to see what folks like to do in-camera...I like to learn from others, maybe there is something I'm not considering.

Could not tell from your original post, thanks for clarifying that you are referring to only JPEGs.

I too would be interested to find out what others do for JPEGs, as for the fact that I only shoot RAW.

I do all adjustments in Photoshop, sometimes I have a bad habit of not fully checking the camera out before a shoot, so to be safe I have some custom settings in place and all other adjustments I do on the PC. Your monitor can give a lot better finished results than looking on the back of the camera.
